MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning to squeak past South Dakota State, 3-2, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Siebert Field.

The Golden Gophers improved to 17-19 overall, while SDSU dropped to 24-15.

The game-winning rally began when Alex Boxwell, who homered earlier in the game, reached on the lone error of the game to open the home half of the ninth. Boxwell moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Schaefbauer and scored on Matt Fiedler's single to center field.

Minnesota's decisive rally came after the Jackrabbits tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter Anthony Schneider was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on Al Robbins' opposite-field double to the left center gap.

The Golden Gophers managed only three hits in the game, but the first two cleared the fence at Siebert Field. Michael Handel homered to straightaway center field to lead off the second inning and Boxwell added a solo shot in the sixth.

SDSU had tied the game at 1-all in the top of the fifth on Eric Danforth's double to right-center that plated Cody Sharrow. Danforth and Robbins were each 2-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' 10-hit attack. Danforth extended his streak of reaching base safely to 27 games, while Zach Coppola upped his streak to 33 games after a bunt single in the third inning.

The Jackrabbits stranded seven runners in the game, including two in the second and seventh innings, when they did not score.

Jackrabbit starter Chad Hodges worked the first three innings, striking out two and walking none in allowing one run. Marcus Heemstra followed with two scoreless innings. J.D. Moore was the hard-luck losing pitcher after hurling the final inning and a third.

For Minnesota, Ty McDevitt was credited with the win after recording the final two outs. Golden Gopher starter Toby Anderson threw five shutout innings, striking out four.

The two pitching staffs combined to strike out 17 batters and issue only one walk (by SDSU), along with Minnesota hitting one batter.

The Jackrabbits return to Summit League action on Friday, traveling to league-leading Oral Roberts for the start of a three-game series. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
