TULSA, Okla. – Cody Sharrow supplied the offense, tying a career high with four runs batted in, and Adam Bray recorded his third consecutive victory after pitching seven strong innings as South Dakota State pulled away for a 7-2 win over Summit League-leading Oral Roberts in the opening game of a three-game baseball series Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
With their 17th win in their last 21 games, the Jacrkabbits improved to 25-15 overall and 12-7 in league play. Oral Roberts dropped to 28-12 overall and 15-4 in The Summit League.
Sharrow opened the scoring with a three-run home run to left-center field in the second inning, plating Newt Johnson and Al Robbins ahead of him.
After allowing a hit to Matt Whatley to lead off the home half of the first inning, Bray did not allow another hit until the sixth. The lone ORU run of the game came without the benefit of a hit in the third inning. Bray walked the bases loaded before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Matt Brandy.
Bray finished his seven-inning outing with six strikeouts and four walks, while allowing one run on four hits in improving to 6-3. He became the Jackrabbits' career leader in innings pitched with 303 2/3, passing Stephen Bougher (299 1/3 innings from 2010-13) in Friday's game.
The Jackrabbits put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth inning. Sharrow drove in the first run of the inning with a single to center, and Eric Danforth and Paul Jacobson followed with run-scoring singles of their own. Luke Ringhofer capped the SDSU scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Danforth.
ORU added an unearned run in the ninth inning on a double by Whatley to wrap up the scoring.
SDSU held a 12-7 advantage in hits, with Zach Coppola, Matt Johnson, Sharrow and Danforth each notching two hits. Whatley was the lone player for ORU with more than one hit.
The two squads are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
