TULSA, Okla. – Chris Anderson limited Oral Roberts to one run over six-plus innings and J.D. Moore tied the Summit League career saves record to lead South Dakota State to a 2-1 victory over Oral Roberts Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
SDSU made history in becoming the first team to clinch a Summit League series win at Oral Roberts by taking the first two games of the three-game weekend series. The Jackrabbits improved to 26-15 overall and 13-7 in league play while moving to within two games of Oral Roberts in the Summit standings. The Golden Eagles dropped to 28-13 overall and 15-5 in The Summit League.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Paul Jacobson led off with a ground-rule double to left center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Coppola and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Ringhofer.
Oral Roberts used nearly the exact same recipe to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Chase Stafford opened the frame with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Matt Whatley before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Matt Brandy. Anderson prevented further damage with runners at the corner by inducing a double-play grounder to end the inning.
ORU also stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the fifth, and left two more men on in the bottom of the seventh.
Ringhofer started the game-winning rally in the sixth with a leadoff double as the Jackrabbits regained the lead. He advanced to third on a base hit by Matt Johnson and scored what turned out to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Newt Johnson.
Talon Jumper relieved Anderson one batter into the seventh inning and recorded two shutout innings before giving way to Moore, who earned his fourth save of the season and 30th save of his career. Moore worked around a one-out single to retire the next two batters on popups to tie the league record previously set by Brett Davis of Illinois-Chicago from 1988-91.
Anderson struck out three, walked two and scattered 10 hits over six-plus innings. Dean Wilson, Audie Afenir and Derrian James each tallied two of the Golden Eagles' 12 hits.
Matt Johnson paced the Jackrabbits' 10-hit effort by going 3-for-4.
SDSU will go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.
NOTES: The Jackrabbits lead the season series, 3-2 … Coppola extended his streak of games reaching base safely to 35, while Eric Danforth singled to up his streak to 29 … SDSU has not trailed in the series … the Jackrabbits have won six of their last seven Summit League games
