FARGO, N.D. – Matt Johnson went 4-for-5 at the plate, including a three-run homer, and Adam Bray continued his recent pitching prowess to lead South Dakota State to a 10-1 victory over North Dakota State in the opening game of a three-game Summit League baseball series Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 29-18 overall and 16-9 in league play. NDSU, which saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end, fell to 17-27 overall and 8-17 in The Summit League. Due to impending inclement weather forecast for later in the weekend, the two squads will conclude the series by playing a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
SDSU broke into the scoring column with a three-run second inning. After Johnson singled to open the inning and walks to Al Robbins and Cody Sharrow loaded the bases, Eric Danforth dumped a single to center field to score Johnson. Zach Coppola followed two batters later with a two-out, two-run single to plate both Robbins and Sharrow.
Johnson upped the Jackrabbit lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth with his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to right field that scored Luke Ringhofer and Reid Clary ahead of him. Ringhofer started the rally with his first of two doubles on the evening, extending his hitting streak to 14 games to tie the squad's longest streak of the season.
Danforth singled and later scored after a pair of wild pitches in the sixth, and the Jackrabbits tacked on three more runs thanks to a Bison error in the seventh to build the SDSU lead to 10-0.
NDSU extended the game in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run. It would be the only run Bray would allow as he struck out eight, scattered eight hits and walked two in earning his seventh win of the season. The Bison stranded runners at second and third in each of the first two innings, but Bray fanned the side to end the threat in the home half of the second.
Marcus Heemstra finished on the mound for the Jackrabbits with two scoreless innings.
Bison starter Sean Terres took the loss after giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three.
Johnson's four hits tied a career high, while adding three runs batted in and three runs scored. Ringhofer and Danforth each tallied two of SDSU's 10 hits.
Aiden Hook was the lone Bison player with two hits to lead NDSU's nine-hit effort.
