The Setup

Zoned In
After allowing 80.0 points per game over its first five contests, South Dakota State made a switch to a primarily zone defense before the Sanford Pentagon Showcase, and in the seven games since have allowed opponents to score just 68.7 points per game. Twice in that span, SDSU held its opponent to under 60 points and allowed over 70 points just twice. As well, the defense has forced 101 turnovers in the last seven games after only 57 opponent turnovers in the opening five games.
Charity Stripe Success
- South Dakota State has gotten to the free throw line more than its opponents in 10 of 12 games this season, and have trailed in free throw attempts in only one game. The Jacks are firing at just under 80 percent from the line this season and have six players hitting above that mark for the year.Â
- SDSU started 21 of 21 on free throws against Idaho on Dec. 10 and finished 25 of 26 for the night. It was the first time SDSU shot 90 percent of better from the field since March 18, 2016 against Maryland when the team went 16 of 17.
- Mike Daum set a new career high with 13 made free throws, which is second most in a game in Jackrabbit history. His 13 of 13 effort also tied the school record for free throw percentage in a single game.
- South Dakota State holds a plus-8.25 advantage in free throw shots per game this year and have hit nearly 100 more free throws than opponents through 12 games (217 to 125).

- SDSU is averaging 62.3 points per game in games it loses, but in wins the team is putting up 81.6 points per contest.
- Opponents are scoring 78.3 points per game in SDSU losses but only 66.6 points per game in SDSU wins.

Daum was picked as the 2016-17 Summit League Preseason Player of the Year, and is living up to the hype with 20.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest so far this year.Â

Jackrabbits' Last Time Out -- Dec. 10, 2016
South Dakota State men's basketball took a double digit lead through the middle of the second half and hung on late in a 80-77 win over Idaho Saturday evening at Frost Arena.
SDSU (5-7) won its 33rd consecutive home game and evened the season series with Idaho (4-5), who won the matchup in Moscow earlier this year.
The Jacks used a stellar 25 of 26 effort from the charity stripe as a team and shot 47.9 from the field in the contest. Additionally, the team hit nine of 25 from long range.
 Â
Mike Daum finished with a career-high 33 points, hitting 13 of 13 free throws for career highs in free throws made and free throw percentage as well. Daum added eight rebounds to just miss a double-double.Â
 Â
A.J. Hess added 18 points with four 3-pointers and a 6 of 6 effort from the charity stripe while
Tevin King and
Andre Wallace each added eight points.
Reed Tellinghuisen dished out a team-high five assists.
For Idaho, Victor Sanders (17 points), Nate Sherwood (14 points) and Trevon Allen (11 points) all finished in double figures.
Trailing early, SDSU saw a 13-4 deficit open up just past the 15-minute mark before
Reed Tellinghuisen and
Andre Wallace drained consecutive 3-pointers to draw SDSU back within two (13-10) less than a minute later. Those jumpers were part of a 22-6 run for SDSU that saw SDSU take a 26-19 lead with 8:06 remaining in the half. That stretch ended with nine straight for the Jacks as Idaho was held without a field goal for six minutes.
  An
A.J. Hess 3-pointer at 4:45 ended a stretch of nearly five minutes without an SDSU field goal to give the Jacks a 33-25 lead, but the Jacks hit 10 of 10 free throws during that span to minimize the damage from the cold streak.Â
Less than a minute later, another set of Daum free throws pushed the Jacks' lead to 10 (35-25) with 4:21 before the half, but the Vandals charged down the stretch and used a 7-0 run inside the final 90 seconds to cut into the Jacks' lead (37-35), but an alley-oop on its final possession sent SDSU into the locker room ahead, 39-35.
South Dakota State stretched its lead back to 15 (51-36) in the opening four minutes of the second half thanks to a 12-0 run as Idaho was held scoreless for more than four minutes as the game moved inside the 16-minute mark.Â
Idaho answered with eight straight of their own to cut the lead to 51-44 to force an SDSU timeout at 13:41, and SDSU stopped the run with a
Chris Howell jumper out of the reset. The Vandals went cold once again over the next three minutes as SDSU pushed its margin back to double digits, 55-44.Â
A pesky Vandal squad, however, did not go away and continued to chip until clawing within three (74-71) with 1:33 to play. Daum sunk a pair of free throws with 59 seconds on the clock, but an old-fashioned 3-point play on the opposite end moved Idaho back within two, 76-74, with 41.5 seconds play.
A free throw battled ensued, and though Idaho came within one (78-77) with three free throws at the 20 second mark, the Jacks hung on for the win as Daum's dunk on the other end sealed it.
Racers' Last Time Out -- Dec. 15, 2016
(GoRacers.com)
The Murray State Racers nearly erased a 20-point deficit but fell short in a 78-73 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels at the Pavilion at Ole Miss Thursday in Oxford, Miss.
Terrell Miller scored 27 points and hauled in 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to keeping the Racers from falling to 5-6.
The Rebels went into the intermission leading the Racers 43-31 after MSU struggle on offensive and went more than eight minutes without a field goal.
Murray State fell behind 62-42 with 10:55 remaining and still trailed by 12 with 3:00 on the clock. The Racers managed to get back into the game and cut the Ole Miss lead to single digits when Jonathan Stark hit a pair of free throws with 1:02 left. The Racers forced a turnover and Damarcus Croaker scored to make it a 76-70 game with 45-seconds left. After Miller made one of two from the line, MSU forced Ole Miss into another turnover, but Miller missed a 3-point try that would've cut the lead to one with :16 left.
Croaker added 13 points and eight rebounds to the Racer attack and Stark added 12 points.
The Racers hit 36 percent from the field on 22-of-61, while Ole Miss hit 36 percent on 22-of-62. Both teams hit seven threes in the game and the Rebels won the rebound stat 49-42.
New Faces, Great Places
South Dakota State's hiring of first-year head coach
T.J. Otzelberger was a nod to the state's motto, "Great Faces, Great Places." The new face of the program, announced April 14, 2016, is in his first-ever heading coaching role, but has been groomed for the position over several assistant stops, working with Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State), Greg McDermott (Iowa State) and Steve Prohm (Iowa State). Alongside Otzelberger, new members of the coaching staff include
Ben Walker, a Creighton hall of fame member who last coached at Jackson State,
Eric Henderson, a former Wayne State (Neb.) standout who spent last season with SDSU's rival, North Dakota State, and
Tyler Glidden, the director of operations who has worked at Creighton and Iowa State.
Rob Klinkefus was the lone holdover from former head coach Scott Nagy's staff, and enters his 11th season at SDSU.
20-Win Seasons
Reaching the 20-win mark has become a standard at South Dakota State University over the previous five seasons, as the Jackrabbits have done in four times in that span and 23 times in the program's history.Â

The Jackrabbits earned the No. 12 seed in last year's West Region, narrowly missing an upset over fifth-seeded Maryland in the first round, falling 79-74. Prior to that, SDSU earned the nickname "Cardiac Jacks" with a run through the conference tournament, pulling off three-point quarterfinal and one-point semifinal wins before earning the automatic bid with a 67-59 win over NDSU in the final.
Mike Daum was named the tournament MVP and
