FORT WAYNE, Ind. – South Dakota State battled Fort Wayne for first place in The Summit League Standings on Thursday, where offensive rebounds and second chance points made the difference for the homestanding Mastodons in a 91-79 win over the Jackrabbits.
IPFW, which improves to 21-7 overall and to 10-3 in league play, turned 13 offensive rebounds into 19 points, while SDSU, which falls to 20-7 overall and to 9-4 in the league, scored five second chance points on six offensive boards.
SDSU went on an early 7-0 spurt, part of a 12-2 run that put the Jackrabbit up 14-5 less than five minutes into the game, with five of those points coming from George Marshall and four from Mike Daum.
Leading 18-8 with 12 minutes, 33 seconds left in the first half, the Mastodons started chipping away at the Jackrabbit lead, and eventually took a 31-29 lead with just over five minutes left in the half, the third lead change of the game.
The Jacks would come back to tie the game at 31, the first of seven tie scores and three more lead changes over the last three and a half minutes before the teams went into halftime tied at 44.
IPFW scored first in the second half, and used an 8-0 run to build a 58-48 lead, its largest of the game to that point, before Daum snapped the spurt with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 58-51 with 15:44 left.
The Jacks kept the lead under 10 points, slowly cut into it, and got it all the way down to two points at 78-76 with 3:11 on the clock, but the Mastodons answered with a 7-0 run to boost the lead back to nine points at 85-76 a couple of minutes later, which essentially sealed the win for the hosts.
Marshall led the Jackrabbits with 27 points in the loss, with both Daum Ian Theisen adding 13 points, which ties a career-high for Theisen. Reed Tellinghuisen finished with 10 points.
Max Landis and John Konchar both scored 22 points to lead the Mastodons, with Konchar adding a game-high 12 rebounds to complete the game's only double-double. IPFW also got 20 points from Michael Calder and 12 more from DeAngelo Stewart in the win.
The Jackrabbits look to rebound from the loss on Saturday, when they travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois. The Jacks and Fighting Leathernecks tip at 2 p.m.
