BROOKINGS, S.D.—Riding a three-match win streak, the South Dakota State men's tennis team hosts William Jewell and North Dakota Saturday in the Jackrabbits' first home matches of the season. SDSU hosts the Cardinals at 8:30 a.m. and UND at 3:30 p.m. at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
"I know the team is psyched to play some tennis in the state of South Dakota. It is something nobody on our men's team has had the chance to do and something we are really looking forward to," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We are riding some solid momentum into the weekend and if we can play the type of tennis we have been playing over the last three weeks we are going to be a tough team to beat."
The Jackrabbits are 3-4 on the year after winning two matches on the road Feb. 19-20. They defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6-1, and Murray State, 5-2.
Three Jackrabbits bring winning streaks into Saturday's matches. Senior Mateus Moreira went 3-1 in singles and doubles in his last outing and has won his last three singles matches playing at No. 3 and No. 4.
Junior Lucas Pereira also has a three-match winning streak, improving to 2-3 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6.
In doubles, SDSU won its last three doubles points. Sophomore Marco Paulo Castro and junior Jonny Higham are 2-0 at No. 2 and No. 3.
William Jewell is 3-4 on the season after dropping a 7-2 match at Baker University, Feb. 20. Sophomore Marc Gartner is 4-2 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles after winning his last two matches. Senior Dean Pinhas is 3-0 at No. 6.
In doubles, the Cardinals have won the doubles point just twice. Gartner and Amery Clews are 2-1 at No. 1 doubles.
North Dakota will be looking for its first win of the season after losing its first eight matches, including three Big Sky Conference matches this past weekend.
Senior David Bergstrom, freshman Travis Lau and senior Joe Lee are all 2-6 on the season at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
