Jackrabbits rally to defeat ORU in 12

TULSA, Okla. – Skyler Wenninger delivered a pair of run-scoring singles, including the game winner in the top of the 12th inning, to help lead South Dakota State to a 3-2 victory over Oral Roberts in the Summit League baseball opener for both teams Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
SDSU, 3-14 overall, rallied from a two-run deficit in the late innings to win on ORU's home field for the third time in four games dating back to last season.
Phil Velez started the 12th-inning rally by reaching on a wild pitch on a third strike and moved into scoring position on two more wild pitches. Wenninger then stepped to the plate with two outs and reached on an infield single to bring home Velez with the game-winning run.
Jackrabbit reliever Landon Busch allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the 12th, but struck out the side to preserve the victory. Busch pitched three shutout innings, striking out five and walking one.
Wenninger, a sophomore from Luverne, Minnesota, tied the game at 2 with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Cody Sharrow, who had plated the first Jackrabbit run of the game with a single and had moved into scoring position on a throw home.
Oral Roberts, 8-9 overall, had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Brent Williams, who finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate. Both runs against Jackrabbit starter Andrew Clemen were unearned. Clemen finished with five strikeouts and scattered five hits and three walks in seven innings. Greg Casper and Ethan Kenkel each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Each team finished with eight hits. Sharrow was 3-for-5 to lead the Jackrabbits, while Wenninger and Luke Ringhofer each tallied two hits.
The two squads are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
