OMAHA, Neb. – The top third of the South Dakota State lineup combined for nine hits and eight runs scored, leading the Jackrabbits to a 15-3 victory over Omaha in a Summit League baseball matchup Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
The Jackrabbits, who registered 19 hits in the contest, improved to 15-23 overall and 10-7 in the Summit League. Omaha dropped to 18-20 overall and 9-8 in league play.
SDSU leadoff hitter
Nick Smith opened the game with a base hit, moved to second on a double by
Paul Jacobson and scored two batters later on a groundout by
Jesse Munsterman to give the Jackrabbits an early 1-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits built the lead to 5-0 in the third inning on a two-run homer by Jacobson and two-run single by
Anthony Schneider.
Omaha scored all three of its runs in the fourth, knocking out SDSU starter
Will McAffer. Sam Palensky delivered the first two runs with a double and Collin Leif added a run-scoring single.
SDSU countered with a run in the fifth and two added two unearned runs in the sixth to push the lead to 8-3.
The Jackrabbits roughed up the Omaha bullpen in the last two innings, scoring three times in the eighth and four in the ninth. Munsterman doubled in two runs in the eight and
Matt Johnson followed with a run-scoring double.
Johnson, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games, finished off the Jackrabbit scoring with a grand slam in the ninth.
Landon Busch pitched five scoreless innings in relief to win his sixth consecutive decision. Busch struck out six, walked four and scattered five hits.
Luke Ringhofer led the Jackrabbits with four hits, with Jacobson and Johnson each tallying three. All nine Jackrabbit starters tallied at least one hit.
Palensky and Clayton Taylor each collected two hits for Omaha.
The two squads are scheduled to play the rubber game of their three-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday.
