OMAHA, Neb. – South Dakota State scored three runs in the final two innings, but the Jackrabbit baseball team's comeback bid came up a run short in a 10-9 loss to Omaha in the finale of a three-game Summit League series Sunday afternoon.
Omaha improved to 19-20 overall and moved into a tie with the Jackrabbits for second place in the Summit League standings at 10-8. The Mavericks, however, won the regular season series four games to two and would hold any tiebreaker over SDSU for seeding in next month's Summit League Baseball Championship. The Jackrabbits dropped to 15-24 overall.
Sunday's game was moved to Millard North High School in Omaha after overnight rain led to unplayable field conditions at the Mavericks' regular home ballpark.
SDSU held a pair of early leads, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first as
Jesse Munsterman doubled in
Anthony Schneider.
After Omaha took a 2-1 lead on run-scoring singles by Adam Caniglia and Riley Herold in the second inning, the Jackrabbits countered with a five-spot in the top of the third for a 6-2 lead.
Newt Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run and
Phil Velez was hit by a pitch to score the go-ahead run.
Cody Sharrow gave SDSU a 4-2 lead with a sacrifice fly and
Paul Jacobson capped the scoring with a two-run double down the left-field line that scored both Johnson and Velez.
Shaky Jackrabbit defense led to two unearned runs in the third before Omaha took the lead for good with a four-run fourth. Cole Gruber plated the first two runs with a single to center field and later scored the final run of the inning on another SDSU error.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and RBI single by Collin Leif to go ahead 10-6.
SDSU reliever
Ryan Froom pitched three shutout innings, after which the Jackrabbits began to chip away at the deficit.
Anthony Schneider's fourth hit of the game, a solo home run to left center in the eighth, cut the margin to 10-7.
In the ninth, Munsterman drew a leadoff walk and scored on
Matt Johnson's double to right center which also extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Corey Binger then entered and allowed a walk to
Newt Johnson and run-scoring single to
Phil Velez, but retired the next three Jackrabbit hitters to end the game.
SDSU out-hit the Mavericks, 13-11, with Jacobson, Munsterman and Velez each tallying a pair of hits. Five different players each collected two hits for Omaha.
The Jackrabbits begin a seven-game homestand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game against Dakota State. Next Summit League action is Friday versus Western Illinois.
