South Dakota State scored in each of the first four innings and overcame some sloppy defense to defeat Dakota State, 12-6, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 16-24 overall, while Dakota State dropped to 17-24 on the season.
SDSU cracked the scoring column first with a run in the bottom of the opening inning.
Luke Ringhofer plated the first run with a single to left-center that score
Anthony Schneider, who reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position with his 11
th stolen base of the season.
Four Jackrabbit errors in the top of the second, including two on one play, allowed Dakota State to take the lead with three unearned runs. The Trojans recorded only one hit in the inning.
The Jackrabbits regained the lead for good with a four-run home half of the second.
Josh Kunzmann knocked in the first run with an infield single and
Tony Kjolsing tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch. The final two runs of the inning both scored on run-scoring groundouts by
Phil Velez and
Mitch Foster.
Matt Johnson led off the third inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 18 games, which is the second-longest streak in program history in the Division I era and one away from tying Tyson Fisher's 19-game hitting streak in 2005. Johnson later scored on a balk.
SDSU put together another four-run inning in the fourth to build the lead to 10-3.
Paul Jacobson delivered a sacrifice fly for the first run and Ringhofer followed with a two-run double to the right-field corner. The last run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by
Tony Kjolsing.
Ringhofer, who reached base safely for the 32
nd consecutive game, was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Matt Johnson,
Phil Velez and
Skyler Wenninger also tallied two of the Jackrabbits' 12 hits.
Dakota State cut the deficit to 10-6 with three runs on five hits in the top of the sixth. The Trojans opened the inning with three straight singles, including an RBI base knock by Dylan Colman, who was 2-for-2. Garrett Mullins and Zach Sutera also recorded run-scoring singles.
Newt Johnson sealed the Jackrabbit victory with a two-run single in the seventh.
Seven SDSU pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters in the game and was led by
Ethan Kenkel's four K's in the third and fourth innings Both Kenkel and
Austin Kost each fanned the side in one inning.
Joe Erickson was credited with the win in his first start of the season. The senior right-hander allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings.
The Jackrabbits return to Summit League action Friday, opening a three-game home series against Western Illinois. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
