BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State softball team opens play in the 2016 Summit League Tournament Wednesday after earning the No. 5 seed. The Jackrabbits, who just defeated South Dakota in the regular-season series 2-1, plays No. 4 seed Coyotes at 3 p.m. at Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D.
The Jackrabbits finished the regular season 23-33 overall and 8-10 in the league. SDSU won six of its last seven games, including a three-game sweep at Fort Wayne and a the wins vs. USD.
Under second-year head coach
Krista Wood, the Jackrabbits recorded their second consecutive 20-win season, the first back-to-back 20-win seasons since winning 30 in 2005 and 24 in 2006.
NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS—A Jackrabbit win would pit them against No. 1 seed North Dakota State in the tournament Thursday at noon. However, a loss would end the season as teams in the first round need to win to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
THE JACKS AT THE TOURNAMENT—SDSU returns to The Summit League Championships for the third consecutive season, and for the fourth time in school history, the first appearance being in 2010.
The Jackrabbits have played seven games in the tournament, posting an 1-6 mark. They lost to Western Illinois and Fort Wayne in 2010 and to South Dakota and Western Illinois in 2014. Last year, SDSU defeated Western Illinois, but lost to North Dakota State and South Dakota in the second round.
AGAINST SOUTH DAKOTA—SDSU won the regular-season series this past weekend, 2-1. After USD won the May 6 opener, 5-4, the Jackrabbits won the nightcap 12-11 and 6-4 May. 7.
Sophomore
Jordyn Sturgeon batted .500 (4-8) with a double, triple and RBI in the series while the Jacks' big three—
Ali Herdliska,
Devan Larsen and
Lauren Chirnside—hit a combined .375. Herdliska had three home runs and three RBI, Larsen two home runs and five RBI and Chirnside a double, home run and four RBI in the series.
On the mound, sophomore
Bryana Clark went 2-1 with 17 strikeouts, including a career-high 11 in the first game. Junior
Ashlyn Bender picked up the first save of the season in the third game. It was SDSU's first save since Pam Nicholson had two in 2010.
EXTRA BASES—Freshman
Ali Herdliska finished the regular season with 47 hits, 25 went for extra bases. She hit six doubles, three triples and tied SDSU's single-season record with 16 home runs. The rookie leads The Summit League in home runs in league games with nine.
#OnTheRise—SDSU recorded its second-straight 20-win season and 12th overall in the program's 46-year history. The Jacks finished fifth in the league standings for a second consecutive season.
