TULSA, Okla. – Top-seeded Oral Roberts broke a tie with a three-run sixth inning and went on to end South Dakota State's season with a 5-2 victory in an elimination game at the Summit League Baseball Championship Friday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles improved to 36-19 overall and will face third-seeded Fort Wayne in the championship game(s) Saturday afternoon. SDSU finished its season with a 22-35 overall record.
All three of ORU's runs in the sixth inning came on two-out hits. Nick Rotola broke the 2-2 deadlock with a double down the right-field line that plated Trevin Sonnier. Nick Roark, who was 3-for-5 to lead the Golden Eagles' 12-hit attack, followed with a double to right-center that scored Rotola and chased Jackrabbit starter
Ryan Froom. Noah Cummings closed the scoring with a single to left-center off reliever
Greg Casper that drove in Roark.
Golden Eagle reliever Holden Cammack held SDSU in check over the final three innings to earn the save. Cammack struck out four, walked one and allowed only one hit.
ORU scored in each of the first two innings on a first-inning single by Brent Williams and sacrifice fly by Rotola in the second.
SDSU came back to tie the game with single runs in the third and fifth innings. ORU starter Cale Tims issued three consecutive walks to open the third inning and was replaced by Grant Glaze.
Luke Ringhofer greeted Glaze with a single to right center to score
Skyler Wenninger. However, Glaze worked out the jam with the second of three double plays the Golden Eagles would turn in the game and a flyout to end the third.
Tony Kjolsing knotted the game at 2-all with a solo home run to left field to lead off the top of the fifth. The Jackrabbits threatened to take the lead later in the inning, but
Paul Jacobson was caught off third base for the second out of the inning.
Glaze was credited with the win after allowing the one run in four innings. Froom took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out three.
SDSU's five hits came from five different players, including Ringhofer, who reached base safely for the 49
th consecutive game to extend his school record.
