The South Dakota State University men's basketball team will play the majority of its games within state borders during the 2016-17 season, as the squad announced the remainder of its schedule Wednesday.
Â
"We believe we have a challenging, yet exciting, slate for the upcoming season," first-year Jackrabbit head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. "Having eight games in the state of South Dakota during non-conference play gives our fans the multiple opportunities to come and support our squad."
Â
The Jackrabbits open the season with four of their first five games on the road. The season opener will be played at fellow NCAA Tournament qualifier California on Nov. 11, followed by a Nov. 14 matchup at UC Irvine, which also serves as the first game of the Sanford Pentagon Showcase multi-team event.
Â
Another western road trip is planned for the following weekend as the Jackrabbits will travel to Wyoming on Nov. 19 and Idaho two days later for the first game in a home-and-home series.
Â
SDSU's home opener is slated for Nov. 16 against Wayne State (Neb.), which will be the first of two non-Division I games. The Jackrabbits, who carry a 30-game home-court winning streak into the 2016-17 campaign, will host Minnesota-Crookston two weeks later on Nov. 30.
Â
The remainder of the Sanford Pentagon Showcase will be played Nov. 25-27 in Sioux Falls, with the Jackrabbits playing a rematch against UC Irvine on the first day, followed by games against East Tennessee State and Milwaukee. All four teams in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase won at least 20 games last season.Â
Â
SDSU will face two more NCAA Tournament teams on the road, traveling Dec. 7 to Northern Iowa and Dec. 22 to Wichita State. A third game against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent is slated for Dec. 19 at Drake.
Â
As previously announced, SDSU will play at Frost Arena on three consecutive Saturdays in December, taking on UMKC (Dec. 3), Idaho (Dec. 10) and Murray State (Dec. 17) to complete the home portion of the non-conference schedule.
Â
SDSU also will host South Dakota Mines in an exhibition game on Nov. 3.
Â
The Summit League portion of the schedule tips off Dec. 28, when the Jackrabbits host North Dakota State in a rematch of the 2016 conference tournament championship game.
Â
Game times will be announced at a later date. The Jackrabbit women's basketball schedule will be revealed on Thursday.
