The South Dakota State women's soccer program returns to Fishback Soccer park this weekend to wrap up non-conference action for the 2016 regular season. The Jackrabbits host Missouri-Kansas City at 6 p.m., on Friday before closing the weekend against Drake on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Friday's games marks the annual "Cubby's Feeds the Fans" event at Fishback Soccer Park as SDSU sponsor Cubby's will grill burgers for fans.
Scouting the Kangaroos
UMKC (1-4-2) enters the weekend off a 3-0 loss to Kansas prior to claiming its first win of the year (2-0 over UT-Martin) the previous weekend. The Kangaroos have three scorers with one goal each, as Sammi Arch, Kelsey Mothershead and Sydni Young have found the net while four others have notched assists. In net, Anna Lillig has played a majority of the minutes with six starts and holds a 1.82 goals against average. South Dakota State leads the all-time series with the 'Roos, 4-1 with the only loss coming in 3-1 fashion last season in Kansas City. Prior to that, the Jacks had claimed back-to-back 1-0 wins in 2012 and 2011 and a 3-0 victory in 2010. At home, SDSU is 2-0 against UMKC and for the overall series, the Jacks lead 6-3 in goal count.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Drake comes to Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday with an unblemished mark, pending its result against Western Illinois on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 6-0-1 this season and have outscored their opponents, 13-1 for the year. Kayla Armstrong and Alyssa Brand each have three goals and one assist for the Bulldogs to lead the offensive attack, while the goalkeeping staff has combined for a 0.14 goals against average through seven games. Brooke Dennis has two starts and 225 minutes played with seven saves and no goals allowed, while Haley Morris has started five games, allowed just one goal in 425 minutes and has 20 saves. Last week, the Bulldogs had Morris named the Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week while Rachel Wanninger was the MVC Offensive Player of the Week. South Dakota State has faced Drake every season since 2005 and leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs, 6-5 with wins in the previous three matchups. The Jacks hold a narrow lead in the overall goal count, 13-12, all-time. At home, SDSU is 2-3 against Drake. The teams have had one overtime contest against each other, a 1-0 win for SDSU in 2011 at Drake.
Last Time Out
The Jackrabbit women's soccer program exploded for a season-high four goals in a shutout rout of Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 11. South Dakota State had 24 individuals see time for the afternoon as the Jacks wrapped up its weekend road trip in dominant fashion, outshooting the Phoenix, 14-6 with eight shots on goal. Green Bay had just one shot on goal for the day. Nicole Hatcher had three points on the day with a goal and an assist while Madison Yueill, K.J. Medler and Lindsee Larson also had goals. Shelby Raper and Kelsi Wipf added assists.Nicole Inskeep had one saved and earned the start, playing the first half beore Maggie Smither entered in the second to secure the team shutout. The Jacks threatened throughout the first half, firing five efforts in the opening frame, but couldn't break through the Phoenix defense and went into the locker room tied, 0-0. Out of the break, though, SDSU's offense erupted after not scoring in over 150 minutes of game action with four second half goals, starting with Hatcher's first goal of the season in the 52nd. Yueill scored in the 59th, Medler had a goal at 85:26 and in the 90th minute Larson had a penalty kick goal.
Power Five Performances
South Dakota State has a difficult non-conference schedule once again this season with three Power Five schools for the year. SDSU dropped a 1-0 contest at Iowa State (Big Ten) this year before drawing 1-1 against Kansas (Big 12) at home. The final Power Five contest for SDSU was a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in double overtime to Wisconsin. In addition to those three, SDSU also had a non-conference game with Creighton, out of the BIG EAST.
Back-to-Back Defensive POW for SDSU
South Dakota State women's soccer's Lindsee Larson became the second consecutive Jackrabbit to earn The Summit League's Defensive Player of the Week honors, announced Sept. 12 by the conference office. Larson earned the start against Green Bay on Sunday and played all 90 minutes and scored her first career goal in a 4-0 win over Green Bay last Sunday. The Omaha, Neb., native helped the Jackrabbits secure their third team shutout of the season and made her mark on the offensive side of the ball as well, finding the net on a penalty kick opportunity in the 90th minute.
Smither Earns Weekly Honor
South Dakota State women's soccer's Maggie Smither was named Summit League Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday, Sept. 6 by the conference office. Smither earned her first ever Player of the Week award after putting together 90 shutout minutes in the net over two games. Smither had five saves total over the two games, logging one save against North Dakota and four against Creighton while facing 10 shots against the Bluejays. Smither also recorded her first two career starts and has yet to allow a goal with 14 saves over 200 total minutes this season. While Smither earned the defensive honors, Fort Waynes Kalliane Mogler and North Dakota State's Holly Enderle split the offensive award.
Extra Time
SDSU has three double overtime games in the previous two weeks and sports a 1-1-1 record in those games. Historically, the Jacks have played well in overtime periods, claiming a 17-15-36 mark in combined games between single and double overtimes. The Jacks are 7-9 all-time in single overtime contests and 10-6-36 in double overtime games. The most overtime games in a season for SDSU was 12 in 2003. Since moving to the Division I level, SDSU's overtime high is six, which came last season.
Split Attack
Nearing the start of conference play and the midway point of the 2016 campaign, South Dakota State has already seen nine players score this year, nearing its totals from the previous two seasons. SDSU had 10 players find the net in 2015 and nine score in 2014. The Jacks have reached double digits for individuals scoring on eight occasions, including a program-high 14 in 2010. The Jacks had 13 individuals find the net in 2003 and have twice (2008 and 2013) seen 12 players score.
Offensive Breakout
Held without a goal in the first two contests, SDSU has now scored in five of its last six games, with multiple goals in two of those games. The Jacks erupted for a season-high four goals in a shutout win against Green Bay in its last time out, and earlier this year notched three goals in a shutout win over Northern Iowa.Â
Chart Climber
Goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep has picked up nine saves through six games this year and is now alone in the third overall spot for career saves with 206, passing Jenn Davis (202 saves) who played for the Jacks from 2003-06. Inskeep is 61 saves away from No. 2 on the list and 63 saves back from tying the school record.
Second Half Shutdown
South Dakota State's defense has allowed just four second half (or overtime) goals through eight games this season, and only six goals for the year overall. The Jacks opened the season without allowing a second half goal in the first five games.Â
Eyes on the Prize
Despite going winless through the openingtwo games, the Jackrabbits have proven over the years it's not how you start, but how you finish. Since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 2004, SDSU has gone 0-2 to open a season six times but has finished with a losing record just once, earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup in two of those seasons.
Inskeep named to Watch List
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep was named to The Summit League's Watch List as part of the preseason coaches poll release. The second-team All-Summit League selection from a year ago led the league in save percentage (.833) and goals-against average (1.82) while collecting five shutouts against league members. Overall, she recorded eight shutouts and posted a 1.06 goals-against average and registered a .815 save percentage and 11-5-3 record. As a starter in 20 of 21 matches in 2015, Inskeep enters the season ranked second in wins (27), shutouts (20), minutes (4,406) and matches played (49), third in starts (41), fourth in saves (195) and saves per game (3.97) and fifth in goals-against average (1.06) in the SDSU record book.
Jacks picked second in Preseason Poll
For the third consecutive year, the South Dakota State women's soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2016 season, according to a preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches. The two-time Summit League Tournament defending champions earned two first-place votes and 56 points in the poll ... Summit League regular-season champion North Dakota State was tabbed the preseason favorite with seven first-place votes and 63 points. The complete poll can be found on page three of the game notes.
2015 Season Review
South Dakota State earned its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, falling at Minnesota, 5-0, in the opening round. SDSU won the Summit League tournament over North Dakota State to earn an NCAA berth, claiming a 3-0 victory over the rival Bison. Overall, SDSU posted a 12-6-3 record and a 5-1-2 conference mark. Individually, SDSU saw Diana Potterveld nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year and named the Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year in addition to earning Capital One Academic All-America, All-District First Team and Summit League All-Academic and First Team honors. Joining her on the All-Summit League First Team was Tori Poole and Delaney Ratcliffe. Nicole Inskeep was named to the Second Team and Brittany Jensen earned an All-Freshman team nod.
