South Dakota State women's soccer scored two first half goals and added one for insurance in the second half en route to a 3-2 win over Missouri-Kansas City on Friday.
The Jackrabbits (4-4-1) were outshot in the game, 17-9, but the Kangaroos (1-5-2) saw the Jackrabbits capitalize in its six shots on goal while UMKC was outdone in that category despite putting seven on goal. Â
"It was great to get that early goal because I really thought that set the tone for the rest of the game," head coach
Lang Wedemeyer said. "Credit to UMKC for coming back, but I thought we did a great job after giving up that goal by putting the pressure on them and drawing that penalty kick. I thought the second half was exciting, going both ways. We had a lot of opportunities, they had a lot of possession and credit goes to our girls for finding a way to win."
Jennie Scislow,
Madison Yueill and Mckenzie Wolf scored for the Jacks while
Nicole Hatcher had SDSU's lone assist. Scislow notched her second goal in as many home contests while Wolf recorded her second career goal (and first since 2013).Â
SDSU got off to a fast start in the game as Scislow found the net in the fifth minute. On a counter attack, Hatcher's cross from midfield found a Scislow on a breakaway near the top left corner of the box. UMKC's goalkeeper originally charged the ball before Scislow took posession, and a near-open net welcomed Scislow's second goal of the year.
Â
That early lead was short lived, however, as the Kangaroos answered in the 10th with a goal of their own. After a ball into the box was cleared off the head of a Jackrabbit defender, UMKC's Reighan Childers secured the ball 25 yards out near the top of the box and fired a shot, beating SDSU's
Nicole Inskeep for the equalizer.
Â
SDSU regained the lead in the 20th as Yueill scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick. A UMKC foul was called at 19:13 in the box, and on the ensuing play Yueill's shot to the right struck gold.
Â
A brief rain shower late in the second turned the field slick and kept play in back-and-forth fashion for the next 25 minutes of play, sending the Jacks to the half, ahead by one.
Â
The scoring continued early in the second frame as Wolf netted her first goal of the year. Off a corner kick and a scrum in the box, Wolf retrieved the ball at the top of the box, dribbled and ripped a shot off the cross bar where it deflected past the goal line to make it 3-1.
Both teams threatened multiple times through the final 35-plus minutes of play, and although the Jacks held off a strong charge from the 'Roos, a goal in the 90th from UMKC's Kelsey Mothershead cut the lead to one (3-2) before time expired.
