Marisa Schulz and the Jackrabbit Soccer team beat Mother Nature and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks Friday evening, claiming a 1-0 win in weather-shortened affair at Fishback Soccer Park.
Â
"Obviously the result was great," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "It's nice to get a win after last weekend. More importantly, I'm really proud of how we came out in the second half and played well. We talked all week about starting the second half better and I'm happy with the performance tonight. More than anything, that's something we can hang our hat on."
Â
South Dakota State (1-2) fired 20 shots in the contest, putting five on goal compared to UND's one shot on goal in three attempts. Â
Â
Tori Poole and
Bianca Madonia each tallied five shots while
Nicole Hatcher had three shots and an assist.
Â
Schulz made the most of her one effort on the day, scoring the eventual game-winner in the 44th as SDSU hung on the rest of the way.
Â
Maggie Smither played 72 minutes in net and had one save.
Â
As the clock wound down in the first, the Jackrabbits cashed in on their aggressive play with Schulz's first career goal at 43:47. Hatcher, who assisted on the play, dribbled through defenders on the left side of the box and put a cross into a mob in front of the net, finding Schulz's head for the score.
Â
State opened the second frame on a tear, putting up 10 shots before a lightning strike in the area brought the game to a halt in the 72nd minute. After the minimum 30-minute delay, continued strikes forced officials to suspend the game.
Â
Per NCAA rules, because 70 minutes of game action had progressed, the game was deemed official, with the result and statistics counting.
