KANSAS CITY – South Dakota State women's soccer dropped a 1-0 contest to UMKC Sunday at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
Â
SDSU fell to 1-3 on the year while UMKC improved to 2-2.
Â
"I was really disappointed with how we started the game, and that's on me as a coach to ensure we play better from the opening whistle," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "After the penalty kick, I thought we responded well and it's important for us learn from these games as we move forward."
Â
The Jacks, who trailed in the day's shot count, 9-3, withstood numerous UMKC attacks but kept things scoreless in the opening period as
Maggie Smither recorded three first-half saves between the pipes.
Â
SDSU pushed the tempo early before momentum swung to the Kangaroo offense, and was unable to record its first shot of the day until the 45th minute when
Kelsi Wipf put a free kick from 40 yards out on net.
Â
Out of the locker room, the Jackrabbits looked to take back control in the second but we're dealt a 1-0 deficit at 47:48 on a penalty kick goal from UMKC's Lexie Howard.
Â
The final 40 minutes of regulation saw State put together several scoring threats, including a pair of shots from
Jennie Scislow at 60:40 and
Leah Manuleleua in the 80th, but UMKC thwarted both efforts.
