The South Dakota State track and field team travels to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in their 11th Summit League Outdoor Championships on May 10-12.
Â
The Jackrabbits enter the weekend with five student-athletes leading The Summit League in seven events. Juniors Kyle Burdick (800m, 1,500m) and Rachel King (5,000m, 3,000S) each have two events a piece.
Â
Both State distance runners are also sitting as runner-ups in another event, with Burdick 2.01 seconds behind the leader in the 5,000m and King 1.99 seconds from the 1,500m leader.
Â
Burdick is coming into The Summit League Outdoor Championships after scoring 28 points at the indoor championships in Fargo, N.D., winning the indoor mile, 3,000m and runner-up behind sophomore teammate Chase Cayo in the 5,000m.
Â
At the 2017 outdoor championships, the Rapid City, S.D. native claimed both the 1,500m and 10,000m championships and finished runner-up in the 5,000m to tally 28 points and earn the league's athlete of the year, track championship MVP, and all-league honors.
Â
King is coming into the outdoor championships after winning the indoor league championship mile, 3,000m, and runner-up in the 5,000m.
Â
During the 2017 outdoor championships, King finished 10th in the 1,500m.
Â
Junior Kasie Vollmer was runner-up in the discus at the 2017 championships and comes into the 2018 championship weekend with league's third-best throw.
Â
Sophomore Jaymie O'Connor has the league's fourth-best 100m hurdles mark, which is her PR, as the 2018 outdoor campaign comes to a close. She finished third in the 60m hurdles at the 2018 indoor championships and second in the 100m hurdles at the 2017 outdoor championship with her then-personal-best mark.

Â
Seniors Colton Bender and Mason Leiseth scored points for the Jackrabbits in last year's outdoor championships with Leiseth finishing seventh in the discus and ninth in the shot put, and Bender adding a fifth-place finish in the hammer.

Â
SDSU has also reset 10 school records during 2018.
Â
Men Indoor School Records: 3
Women Indoor School Records: 4
Men Outdoor School Records: 4
Women Outdoor School Records: 3
Â
Junior Rachel King is leading the charge for resetting the school records. She is responsible for three school records indoor and two outdoor records (IN: Mile, 3,000m, 5,000m, OUT: 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m). She added a personal-best mark in the 1,500m, which is second on the school's all-time list.
Â
Senior Colton Bender reset the school record for indoor weight throw four times throughout the indoor season and has reset the school record for outdoor hammer throw twice this season, having first set the school record in 2017.
Â
Sophomore Bryant Courter also was resetting school records during the indoor season in the triple jump. Throughout the season, he reset the school record four times and etched his name on three meet records (including in the indoor league championship record).
Â
Courter also posted personal-best top 10 marks in the high jump and long jump indoors.
Â
As for outdoors, he has tied his personal-best in the long jump, which is third all-time, and is within 7.50 inches of his personal-best triple jump, which is also third all-time.
Â
Freshman Daniel Clarke has added top 10 marks in both the indoor and outdoor long jump marks, posting fourth all-time indoors and a tie for ninth-best outdoors.
Â
In the last weekend of the outdoor season, Clarke put his name in the school's top 10 on the 100m and as the third leg of the 4x100m relay.
Â
Junior Krista Steele finally got the school record in the indoor 800m at the league championships, chasing teammate Oksana Covey's 2017 mark all year. She also was within 0.10 seconds of tying Covey's school record in the indoor 600m.
Â
Steele has reset her outdoor 800m personal-best mark twice already this season, jumping into second all-time. She also notched a PR in the 1,500m, the same weekend she first reset her outdoor 800m PR.
Â
For relay teams, Steele added a school record in the distance medley and third-best all-time 4x800m relay. Both of them were ran at the Drake Relays.
Â
Freshman Trent Francom is making a big freshman splash, finishing with a share of the school record in the indoor pole vault with his big jump in the indoor championships. He is sharing the record with his brother, Reagan Francom and Lynn Olson.
Â
As for the outdoor season, he broke the school record wide open at Drake with school's first-ever mark over 17 feet. He increased the school record by 5.50 inches.
Â
Senior Mason Leiseth and redshirt Noah Huber have been juggling spots in the top 10 for shot put. Leiseth started out the outdoor season as 10th-best on the list, but Huber added his name to third-best the list, which kicked Leiseth off the list.
Â
In California (April 19-20), Leiseth recorded a PR on Thursday right behind Huber for fourth. The next day, he added another 1-02.25 feet to the PR, which carved his name into second all-time.
Â
At Mount Marty (April 25), he added another 1-01.50 feet to his PR to tie the school record. He's added 2-03.75 feet to his best throw in six days.
Â
Leiseth is also eighth on the discus top 10 and second in the indoor shot put, ahead of his father, Dave Leiseth, who is now fifth, and Huber, who is third.
Â
Season Wrap-Up
South Dakota State made the most of the 2018 outdoor season so far, despite being at the mercy of the abnormal weather this season.
Â
The Jackrabbits kicked off the season where they are starting the post-season - Tulsa, Okla. The Jackrabbits compete against several Big XII and Summit League schools at the Tulsa Duals, beating all of the schools on the men's side and beating five-of-six on the women's side.
Â
The men's 4x100m relay team added their first school top 10 mark of many, posting the school's then-second-best time, now third.
Â
State then had its first weather change, going back to Tulsa - this time ORU, after the SMSU Mustang Open had been canceled due to weather. A small group of Jacks traveled to California to compete in the Distance Carnival and Stanford Invite.
Â
In the first look of the newly built ONEOK Sports Complex, 13 Jackrabbits tallied 22 personal-bests, with senior Vanessa Lane competing in four events - scoring personal-bests and leading the team in two.
Â
Sophomores Haley Mottinger and Kayla Neff scored the most personal-best marks with three each - every event they competed in.
Â
As for the student-athletes in Stanford and San Francisco, Calif., junior Rachel King stole the show with her personal-best mark in the 3,000m steeplechase which was ranked in 21st in the world, fifth in the NCAA, and first in The Summit League. For her performance, King was the lone Jackrabbit to win a Summit League Athlete of the Week honor.
Â
The Dakota Duals scheduled on April 7 were also canceled because of poor weather, so SDSU hosted an exhibition against South Dakota. However, on the following Wednesday, the Jackrabbits made a trip to Vermillion, S.D. to compete in the impromptu South Dakota Invite.
Â
Senior Colton Bender first reset his 2017 school record in the hammer throw at the Invite with the school's first throw over 200 feet. Fellow senior Mason Leiseth posted a PR in the discus to re-establish his name on the school's top 10 at ninth.
Â
Instead of competing in the Lyle Hokanson Classic, the track team waited until the following weekend and made another trip out to California.
Â
Senior Vanessa Lane and sophomore Evan Hieber posted their first and only regular season multi-event marks, with Hieber adding a PR score that finished seventh on the school's all-time list and Lane scoring the league's best mark.
Â
Junior Rachel King and sophomore Kendra Dykstra put the second-best and fourth-best times on the school's top 10 in the 1,500m while junior Krista Steele reset the school record in the 800m.
Â
Sophomores Miatta Flemister-Smith and Jaymie O'Connor also posted personal-best marks in the top 10. Flemister-Smith improved both her 100m and 200m, and almost added a 400m top 10 mark. O'Connor reset her school record in the 100m hurdles.
Â
Leiseth reset his PR in the shot put and discus - second all-time in the shot put and fourth in the discus.
Â
On the same weekend, some Jackrabbits traveled to Northern State and tallied 14 event winners.
Â
SDSU competed at three meets in the last weekend in April: the Mount Marty Twilight, Drake Relays, and Kip Janvrin Open.
Â
The relay teams highlighted the Drake Relays with Jacks scoring eight relay marks in the top 10. Freshman Trent Francom was the first Jack to break the 17-foot barrier in the pole vault and junior Kyle Burdick was the first 1,500m winner since 2005. Bender also reset his school record yet again in the hammer.
Â
Last weekend, the last time to compete before the league championships, the State runners didn't stop adding PR's. Kendra Dykstra finished with the school's fourth-best mark in the 800m while Burdick added the seventh-best in the event on the men's side.
Â
The 4x100m relay team that finished with the school's second-best mark - short by 0.03 seconds - at the Drake Relays, went to Nebraska in hopes of gathering that school record. In return, they broke the 2015 record by 0.07 seconds. (1. R-Fr. Coby Hilton, 2. So. Landon Larson, 3. Fr. Daniel Clarke, 4. So. Sam Zenner)
Â
Clarke, also added the school's fourth-best time in the 100m.
Â
Now the Jackrabbits will start the post-season where it all started - in Tulsa, Okla. - on Thursday in hopes of scoring points for the team and making qualifying marks for the NCAA West Regionals.
