DENVER, Colo. – The South Dakota State volleyball team was topped by Denver, 3-1 (13-25, 15-25, 31-29, 18-25), on Friday in a Summit League matchup.

The Jackrabbits fell to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Summit League action, while Denver improved to 10-5, 2-1 SL.

Makenzie Hennen led the way for the Jacks' offense with 12 kills and was just one dig shy from a double-double with nine digs.
Tori Thompson recorded seven kills, while
Ashlynn Smith paced the team with three service aces.
Carly Wedel registered her first ever double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs, while adding five kills.

Burk posted a team-best 16 digs and added two blocks, good for second on the Jacks' squad.
Tatum Pickar recorded 14 digs, while
Anna Nerad held a team leading three blocks.

Denver started out the match by scoring the first five unanswered points to take an early advantage. The Jackrabbits tried to work their way back from the deficit, but Denver held an 18-13 lead when it scored seven straight points to capture the first set, 25-13.

Set two was tied at 5-all when the Pioneers scored six consecutive points to pull ahead, 11-5. Hennen recorded a kill as the Jacks trailed 17-12. Denver scored eight of the final 11 points to earn a 25-15 win in set two.

The Jackrabbits picked up momentum headed into the third set as kills from Nerad, Smith and four Pioneer errors gave State a 7-4 advantage. Denver trailed 13-12 when the Jacks added five straight points, including two kills by Thompson, to extend its lead to 18-12. The Pioneers went on an 11-3 run to take a 23-21 lead late in the third. The teams traded points until the set was tied at 29-29. A Pioneer attack error and a kill by Thompson gave the Jacks a 31-29 win in the third set.

Kills by Nerad, Hennen and Burk, paired with three Pioneer errors tied the fourth set, 6-6. A 10-3 run gave Denver a 16-9 lead. The Jacks posted several short runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit as the Pioneers sealed the match with a 25-18 fourth set win.
