SIOUX FALLS –
Mike Daum headlined three Jackrabbits selected to the All-Summit League teams Thursday as a three-peat selection as the Player of the Year. Daum joined
David Jenkins on the first team, while
Skyler Flatten picked up a second team nod.
"As a program we are honored for the accolades that our individual players received," head coach
T.J. Otzelberger said. "We know that these honors are the result of the hard work and dedication of both the recipients and their teammates. There are many worthy candidates of these awards in a highly-competitive Summit League, so we have tremendous gratitude for the recognition we received."
Daum leads the Jackrabbits with a double-double average of 25.6 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, shooting 51 percent from the field. He is one of three players nationally averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, and the only one with 25-10 marks.
The now three-time Summit League Player of the Year and four-time All-Summit League First Team selection, Daum became the 10th member of the NCAA's 3,000-point club in February. He also broke the South Dakota State and Summit League records for points and rebounds, and is the only known player nationally to actively hold program records in points, rebounds and 3-pointers.
The Kimball, Nebraska native had 20 double-doubles in the regular season and was named the Summit League's Player of the Week a league-record eight times this year. He also owns the career record with 18 weekly honors. Daum is the second player in Summit League history to win the award three times, and is one of three players in Summit League history to earn four all-league first team selections in a career.
"Mike had another amazing season," Otzelberger said. "He has continued to work tirelessly to perfect his craft. His unique skill set, character and team-first mentality has solidified his place as one of the greatest players in the history of the Summit League."
Jenkins is second in scoring for the Jacks at 19.4 points per contest, as the sophomore has dropped 20 or more points in 14 games this season. He scored a career-best 35 against Memphis, and picked up Summit League Player of the Week honors Feb. 18 after hitting a buzzer-beater at North Dakota State the Saturday prior.
The Tacoma, Washington native became the 48th member of SDSU's 1,000-point club in January after just 57 career games, and currently sits 28th on the school's all-time scoring chart with 1,146 career points.
He reset the program's single-season 3-point record and currently ranks ninth in the league record books with 106 treys on the year. He has hit eight or more 3s in three contests this year, including a 10-trey showing Feb. 14 against Omaha to tie the school's single-game record.
Jenkins was an all-league second team selection a year ago alongside earning 2018 Freshman of the Year honors.
"David is a tremendous scorer who has demonstrated consistency throughout the season," Otzelberger said. "His unique ability to make plays and shots has helped elevate our team. We look forward to David's continued development providing a position impact on our program moving forward."
Flatten has made the most of his sixth-year at South Dakota State, averaging 15.8 points per game with 82 3-pointers, 40 steals and 66 assists. He has reached double figures in 27 contests this season with six 20-plus scoring performances. From Clark, South Dakota, Flatten scored 36 with eight 3-pointers at Denver, and on senior night led the Jackrabbits with 31 points.
Flatten, who has started all 31 games for the Jackrabbits, is in 11th nationally in total minutes played and sits 13th in NCAA Division I with a 45.1 3-point field goal percentage this year. He is 10th all-time at SDSU with 181 career 3-pointers and is in the top three of the record books with a 43.2 career 3-point field goal percentage.
He is closing in on the 1,000-point club as the team begins postseason play with 967 career points.
"Skyler has been resilient in his career as a Jackrabbit," Otzelberger said. "He has overcome many hurdles and obstacles to establish himself as one of the premier student-athletes in the Summit League. It's been an honor to watch Skyler's hard work pay off for him and our program."
The Jackrabbits begin their Summit League Tournament run Saturday as the No. 1 seed. SDSU will take on eighth-seeded Western Illinois at 6 p.m. from the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
