MACOMB, Ill. - The South Dakota State track and field teams carried 20 Jackrabbits onto the finals of The Summit League Outdoor Championships while seniors 
Kyle Burdick and 
Rachel King notched the first SDSU victories.
 
Burdick opened up the competition in the morning with the 10,000m by claiming his second career win in the event (31:16.94) andthe school's fourth consecutive win in the race (since 2016). The Rapid City, S.D. native is the second Jack to win the event multiple times in their career (Trent Lusignan, 2013-2016).
 
King added a 32.70-second win (10:09.85) in her specialty, the 3,000m steeplechase, to score back-to-back wins in the outdoor championship event.
 
On the men's side of the steeplechase, junior 
Micah Mather earned his second straight all-league honor with a runner-up finish, making 2019's performance his best of his career (improved place-finish and mark in the championships).
 
Back in February, the men's 800m crew crammed all four Jacks into the indoor championship finals, who eventually finished 1-2-3-4 in the finals. Tonight, the squad slammed all six SDSU student-athletes from the preliminary round. Leading the way was senior 
Cal Lawton (1:51.95), followed by freshman 
Riley Bauer (1:54.30), who both won their respective heats.
 
The Jackrabbit duo in sophomore 
Coby Hilton and junior 
Sam Zenner became a 1-2 punch in the 100m and 200m preliminary round, posting the best two times in both events.
 
The two speedsters first ran the 100m with Hilton re-writing the school record (10.39w) that was previously held by teammate 
Daniel Clarke from last year's championships (10.43w). The Marshall, Minn. native cut 0.04 seconds from the record while Zenner tied his personal-best mark and No. 5 all-time mark (10.51w).
 
Clarke, a sophomore (10.65w), raced behind Zenner in the second heat of the event as all three earned auto-bids into the championship with the three fastest prelim marks by 0.19 seconds over the rest of the field.
 
In the 200m, Hilton (21.02w) and Zenner (21.41w) led the opening heat together as Zenner reset his season-best mark. The Eagan, Minn. native was 0.05 seconds from his career best and No. 6 all-time mark; Hilton was 0.10 seconds away from his school-record mark set on two separate occasions earlier this season (20.92).
 
In the women's 800m, sophomore 
Oksana Covey led the league with an opening heat win (2:10.88) while senior 
Krista Steele finished runner-up in the second heat (2:13.79) as both will compete in the finals tomorrow.
 
Freshman hurdler 
Reid Pierzinski managed to score championship positioning in both the 110m hurdles (14.72w) and 400m hurdles (54.33). He had the league-best 400m hurdles mark out of the prelims, winning the opening heat, and the third-best 110m hurdles mark with a personal-best reset.
 
Junior 
Nick Wessels had the best second-best mark out of the 110m hurdles prelims with a PR reset and No. 7 all-time SDSU mark (14.41w).
 
Junior 
Jaymie O'Connor qualified in 100m hurdles for the third straight time with an auto-bid in the championships. She won her heat (13.87w) while junior 
Haley Mottinger (ninth, 14.57w) just missed the finals by 0.12 seconds.
 
Freshman 
Lauren Van Dyke and sophomore 
Emily Altenburg qualified for the finals in their first outdoor championship appearances of their respective events.
 
Altenburg scored a 0.03-second personal-best for an eighth-place finish in the 100m (12.28w) and followed it up with a 1.75-inch PR in the long jump (sixth, 18-06.00).
 
Van Dyke was within 0.04 seconds of her personal-best mark in the 400m, still finishing sixth in the preliminary round (57.70).
 
Three Jackrabbits in the women's shot put also scored personal-best marks in Hanson Field as sophomore 
Madeline Moorhouse led with the school's No. 9 all-time mark outdoors for a seventh-place finish (46-00.50).
 
Freshmen duo 
Meghan Hettinga (10th, 44-04.00) and 
Caitlin Thilges (14th, 43-05.00) were the other two to tally career-best marks in their first outdoor championships.
 
The men's decathlon wrapped up by mid-afternoon with junior 
Evan Hieber recording a fourth-place finish (6,605) that included two personal-best marks and four season-best marks with a win in the high jump (6-07.00). At the end of the first day, he was within 10 points of his first-day personal-best mark.
 
Teammate and senior 
Peter Bates climbed to seventh in the decathlon standings thanks to his second personal-best reset in the decathlon score (6,052). The Waverly, Iowa native came away with four personal-best marks and a season-best reset.
 
RECAPPING THE WEEK
On Wednesday, senior 
Logan Ammons added a personal-best mark in the hammer throw finish runner-up (198-04.00) with the school's No. 2 all-time mark.
 
He entered the competition with the league's eighth-best throw and added 5-02.00 to move ahead of Jake Brinkmann (2012, 195-01.00) and behind former teammate and school-record holder 
Colton Bender (2018, 206-09.00).
 
Also improving his PR was sophomore 
Noah Huber, recording a 9-07.00 personal-best increase and moving into the school's all-time list at No. 7 (12th, 178-03.00).
 
Senior 
Rachel Astleford and junior 
Evan Hieber also competed in the javelin throw. Astleford finished ninth (120-08.00) in her final outdoor championships while Hieber scored an eight-place spot (166-01.00) with a season-best.

Colton Bender (2018, 206-09.00). Ammons moved ahead of Jake Brinkmann (2012, 195-01.00) and sits 43rd in the NCAA West Prelims performance list as of Wednesday afternoon.
 
Also adding a personal-best mark and climbing the all-time list was sophomore 
Noah Huber, entering the list for the first time at No. 7 all-time. His 9-07.00 improvement helps him move ahead of teammate 
Samuel Coil - who was eighth-best and is now ninth all-time.

Evan Hieber finished his second career decathlon at the outdoor league championships, with his second-best multi-event score all-time. His mark would be No. 6 all-time if he didn't reset the school record last year at the outdoor championships (6,844).
 
Throughout the two-day event, he scored two personal-best marks and four more season-best marks, falling just 10 points short of his day-one personal-best score (3,610) set in 2018 (3,620).
 
Hieber came close by scoring personal-best marks in two events, including a huge outdoor and overall personal-best in the high jump to win, and adding three more season-best marks. His first event was a 0.05-second PR in the 100m while claiming two season-bests in the long jump (by 0.75 inches) and shot put (by 1-00.75 feet) for a third-place finish.
 
Then came the high jump. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native climbed another three inches for an outdoor best, and one more inch for an overall best, to claim his first outdoor high jump victory, third overall (indoors and outdoors). In the overall standings, the junior climbed momentarily from fourth to third, just 199 points behind the leader.
 
On day two, his Javelin mark added his third season-best mark of the event. He recorded a season-best on Wednesday at the open javelin competition (161-01.00, eighth) and added another four feet today to finish third in the decathlon.
 
Junior 
Evan Hieber finished the first day of The Summit League Outdoor Championships within 10 points of his day-one personal-best decathlon score. His previous-best (3,620) was set at the 2018 league championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Senior 
Peter Bates came away with a seventh-place finish in the decathlon, his second personal-best reset of the season by adding another 30 points to his Bryan Clay Invite mark. He moved up one spot in the all-time rankings to No. 8, five points away from the No. 7 all-time mark.
 
Throughout the course of the two-day event, the Waverly, Iowa native earned four personal-best marks and one season-best mark.
 
On the first day, Bates came within 11 points of his day-one personal-best decathlon score at The Summit League Championships, claiming three personal-best marks along the way. His previous-best mark was set earlier this year at the Bryan Clay Invite (3,135).
 
He opened competition with a 0.09-second personal-best mark in the 100m, earning his best place-finish of the day. Then he came away with a six-inch personal-best mark in the shot put and followed it up with a two-inch PR in the high jump.
 
On the second day, his eighth-place finish in the discus throw (98-03.00), adding another 4-05.00 PR reset. He finished with a sixth-place finish and season-best mark (153-10.00) and posted his best place-finish in the 1,500m with a bronze finish (4:55.27).
