The South Dakota State women's volleyball team continues nonconference action as it travels to Beaumont, Texas for the Katrinka Crawford Invitational, Friday-Saturday.
The Jackrabbits will take on Louisiana Monroe and host team Lamar on Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. SDSU will close out the weekend against Prairie View A&M with a 10 a.m. match on Saturday.
Last Time Out
The Jacks went 1-2 in their opening weekend of the 2019 season at the EIU Panther Invitational. SDSU defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-23), while falling to both Memphis, 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25), and Drake, 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 22-25, 21-25).
In the opening match of the season,
Crystal Burk paced the Jacks with a career-best 19 kills on a .417 hitting percentage. The sophomore also recorded her fourth ever double-double in the win over Eastern Illinois as she tallied 14 kills and 10 digs.
Makenzie Hennen posted double-doubles and double digit kills in all three matches, while
Ashlynn Smith recorded a weekend-high 12 kills against Drake. The freshman pair of
Tori Thompson and
Anna Nerad received the starting nod in all three matches. Thompson and Nerad recorded a team leading three blocks each against Drake, while
Carly Wedel also added three blocks.
Hennen ranks fourth in the Summit League with 42 total kills and fifth in kills per set (3.50).
Madison Fay is rates sixth in assists per set with 6.75. Burk sits at 15th with a hitting percentage of .255.
Scouting the Opponents
Louisiana Monroe holds a 3-1 record after the first week of play. The Warhawks went 11-19 last season with a 3-13 record in the Sun Belt Conference. Leading the way so far this season for Louisiana Monroe is Mikaela Worley, who has a total of 46 kills and averages 4.18 kills per set. The senior is hitting .381 after committing just nine errors on a total of 97 attack attempts. Albany Schaffer leads the back row defense with 32 digs, while Kate Blasingame isn't far behind with 30. Hailey Hughes leads at the net with nine blocks in just four matches. The Warhawks are under the direction of head coach Charlie Olson who is in his first season. The match on Friday will be the Jacks first encounter with Louisiana Monroe.
Lamar went 7-20 overall during the 2018 season, while holding a 4-12 mark in the Southland Conference. After competing at the GSU Invitational, the Cardinals are 1-2 early this season. Abigale Nash recorded two double-double and totaled double-digit kills in all three matches, to pace the Cardinals offense. Erin Pequena was named to the GSU Invitational All-Tournament team after recording a total of 52 digs. Lamar is under the direction of second year head coach, Michelle Kuester, who has a record of 8-22. SDSU leads the all-time series against Lamar, 2-0. In the last meeting (2007), the Jacks defeated the Cardinals, 3-1, in Beaumont, Texas.
Prairie View A&M has a record of 4-0 early this season after competing at the Sam Houston State Tournament opening weekend and dropping a nonconference home match to Houston Baptist, 3-0. The Panthers are led offensively by a pair of seniors in CeTara Carter and Jaylan Thomas, have a totals of 37 and 35 kills, respectively. Carter also holds a team-best 12 blocks. Skyla Childs paces Prairie View A&M with 56 digs, averaging 3.73 per set. TaCho Tyler is in her fifth season at the help of the Panthers, accumulating a 34-91 record. The Jacks match against Prairie View A&M on Saturday will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Post Season Accolades
Makenzie Hennen became the first Jackrabbit since
Ashley Beaner in 2016 and the eighth overall to earn all-league honors as she was named honorable mention All-Summit League.
After posting a 3.425 GPA as a team, the Jacks were recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, earning the Team Academic Award for the 2018-2019 season.

With #PERFORM as the official hashtag for the 2019 campaign, SDSU looks to take the next step in Cirillo's fifth season. SDSU closed last year with a pair of wins in its final five matches, and seven Jackrabbit returners blend with eight promising newcomers on this year's team.
Smith, Hennen Named Players to Watch
SDSU's
Ashlynn Smith and Mackenzie Hennen were recognized by the Summit League as 2019 Volleyball Players to Watch.
Smith started 25 of 29 matches for South Dakota State last season, finishing second on the team in kills (251) and kills per set (2.46). The Laporte, Indiana native recorded a pair of double-doubles and had double-digit in 10 matches.
Hennen, an All-Summit League honorable mention pick in 2018, started all 29 matches and was the team's top all-around threat. She led the Jackrabbits in kills (340), kills per set (3.27) and attempts (1,098) while sitting second in digs (281), service aces (13), digs per set (2.70) and solo blocks (seven). The Jordan, Minnesota native had two 20-kill matches, 18 10-kill matches and 13 double-doubles. Hennen has 725 career kills and is on pace to reach 1,000 kills before her collegiate career comes to a close.
