Games 12 & 13 | North Dakota (4-11, 3-3) at South Dakota State (8-3, 2-0) |
South Dakota State
The Jackrabbit men return to the Frost Arena Friday and Saturday, hosting North Dakota at 7:30 p.m. each night.
It has been a season of starts and stops for the Jacks, who played eight games in the first 18 days of the season. Following a layoff of 22 days, SDSU rattled off three wins in six nights before last weekend's cancelation of two games at Omaha.
SDSU will have played only three games in the 40 days leading up to Friday.
During SDSU's most recent contest, a 92-63 drubbing of Western Illinois Jan. 9,
Douglas Wilson and
Noah Freidel both played. It marked the first time SDSU's two preseason first-team all-league selections played in a game together since a Dec. 4 win at Bradley. Wilson missed four games while Freidel sat out two.
The Jackrabbits have won 27 consecutive games in Frost Arena, the fifth-longest active streak in Division I. Additionally, SDSU has won 30 straight conference games at home.
Â
North Dakota
Coming off an appearance in the Summit League championship game last March, the Fighting Hawks are 4-11, but 3-3 in conference play.
UND has recorded splits every weekend in league play, handing both Oral Roberts and North Dakota State their only conference losses.
There is no question 6-foot-9 post Filip Rebraca is the straw that stirs the drink for North Dakota. The long-armed, athletic Serbian was honorable mention all-league last year and is UND's only double-figure averager at 16.8 points per game. He is shooting 52 percent while hauling in 6.9 rebounds per game.
For the entire year, Rebraca ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage, sixth in scoring and seventh in rebounding.

The Series
SDSU and UND have been playing men's basketball against one another for better than 100 years, with the North Dakotans holding a 104-88 series advantage.
The Jacks have won the last nine meetings and 10 of 11 in Division I, the most recent a 74-62 SDSU victory as part of the Dakota Showcase last month in Sioux Falls.
Frost Arena has not been kind to UND as of late - the Jacks have won each of the last 17 meetings in Brookings. The last time North Dakota won in Frost was on Feb. 11, 1995, an 84-72 victory.
Â
Pork Classic
Saturday's doubleheader will be the 50th edition of the Pork Classic.
Established in 1972, the Pork Classic provides scholarships for SDSU animal science students interested in pursuing careers in pork production.
Â
3-Point Shooting
Three times this season the Jacks have made at least half of the 3-pointers they have attempted.
SDSU made a season-best 17 triples in 26 attempts, shooting 65 percent in a win at Bradley (Dec. 4).
The Jacks hit 15 from deep in a blowout of Utah State Nov. 26 (15-of-27) and made 11-of-21 in their most recent outing, a 92-63 defeat of Western Illinois Jan. 9.
Â
3-Point Shooting, Part 2
This may come as a shock, but having two all-league players in the lineup tends to boost an offense's efficiency.
   Â
Douglas Wilson and
Noah Freidel have appeared together in just six of SDSU's 11 games this season. In those six, the Jacks have made 61-of-130 3-pointers (46.9 percent). SDSU has made at least nine treys in four of those six, including a 17-of-26 outburst at Bradley Dec. 4.
On the flip side, in games the Jacks were missing one or the other, SDSU has made 34-of-111 from long range, a 30.6 percent rate.
Â
Scheierman's Success
   Â
Baylor Scheierman has taken his game to another level during his sophomore campaign.
The Aurora, Neb., native posted consecutive double-doubles in wins at Iowa State and Bradley, earning Summit League Player of the Week honors.
He followed that up with two more double-doubles in wins vs. North Dakota State and North Dakota as part of the Dakota Showcase in Sioux Falls.
In all, he has scored in double figures in 10 of 11 games, and posted double-doubles on six occasions.
Â
Freidel in His 20s
    Not only did
Noah Freidel recently turn 20, but the sharpshooter from Tea has also been a regular in the 20-point club as of late.
He has scored 20 points 12 times in 37 career games, including three times this season.
Freidel was named CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson Mid Major Player of the Week after scoring 47 points and making 10-of-17 3-pointers in wins at Iowa State and Bradley last month.
   Â
Summit League Favorites
South Dakota State was the pick to win the Summit League in the conference preseason poll, garnering 33 of 36 first place votes. The Jackrabbits return the Summit's coach and player of the year and feature three preseason all-league honorees.
   Â
Douglas Wilson was voted as player of the year, while
Noah Freidel joined him on the first-team.
Matt Dentlinger was chosen as second-team all-league.
Â
Power Five Wins
SDSU's victory at Iowa State Dec. 2 marked the fifth time in the past six seasons the Jacks have defeated a Power Five program. Dating back to 2008-09, SDSU has beaten a Power Five opponent eight times in 13 seasons.
Iowa State and Iowa have each fallen twice to the Jacks. In fact, SDSU is 4-0 against those two programs since moving to Division I.
SDSU also has wins over Ole Miss, TCU, Minnesota and Washington in that span.
That doesn't include a win at No. 16 New Mexico on Dec. 22, 2012 in Albuquerque.
Â
Run of Success
South Dakota State has played in eight consecutive postseasons, a run that would likely have grown to nine if not for the COVID-19 pandemic causing all the tournaments to be canceled last March. That includes five NCAA Tournaments, a pair of National Invitation Tournaments and one trip to the College Basketball Invitational.
Only 16 programs in Division I have played in each of the last eight postseasons.
During this string of success, the Jacks have won five Summit League Tournaments and claimed at least a share of six regular season league titles.
The Jackrabbits have won 20 or more games each of the last three years and seven of the previous nine seasons.
Â
Frost Arena Effect
No place in Division I men's basketball is harder for visiting teams to win in than Frost Arena. Don't believe us? Try this on for size...
Since 2015-16, South Dakota State is 71-3 in Frost Arena. That's a .959 winning percentage at home over the past five seasons. Over that span, only Kansas, Gonzaga and New Mexico State are also over .920
If that isn't enough, let's go back to 2011-12. SDSU has played 128 games at Frost in the last nine-plus years, winning 122 of them. Six of those seasons, the Jacks didn't lose at home.
The Jackrabbits have won 27 consecutive games at home, the fifth-longest active streak in Division I men's hoops.
Additionally, the Jackrabbits were one of 13 teams to go undefeated at home in 2019-20.
Â
Frost Effect Part 2: The Summit League
Since joining the Summit League in the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits are 90-19 in conference games played at Frost Arena.         Â
SDSU went 21-15 at home in its first four seasons in the Summit, but since then, the Jacks have been an impressive 69-4 against the league in Brookings. That's a span of nine seasons, including seven in which SDSU did not lost a game at home in league play.
The Jacks have won 30 consecutive conference games in Frost Arena, a string dating back to Omaha's 101-93 win over the Jacks on Jan. 7, 2017.
