BROOKINGS— The South Dakota State track and field program returns to the SJAC Saturday to host the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. A schedule can be found here, along with heat and flight assignments here. Squads from North Dakota State, North Dakota, Northern State and Augustana will be included in the day's events.

ABOUT JIM EMMERICH
A 1940 South Dakota State graduate, Jim Emmerich was born March, 18 1911 in New Ulm, Minnesota. Emmerich started the cross country program at SDSU in 1947, and coached cross country and track and field at the university from 1946-60. During that time, his track and field teams won 10 North Central Conference titles. Emmerich's 1953 track squad won the NAIA National Championship, marking the first national title in any sport at South Dakota State. Six years later in 1959, his team would go on to win the NCAA College-Division title.
A nationally-known athletic trainer, Emmerich worked for the U.S. team at the 1956 summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia and was head trainer for U.S. teams at the 1959 Pan Am Games in Chicago as well as at the 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo and also served as head trainer for the U.S. Hockey team. In 1963, he traveled with U.S. track teams for dual meets in Russia, Poland, West Germany and England. In 1967, was an administrative assistant for the U.S.'s Pan Am team in Winnipeg and in 1968 was appointed as an administrative official for the Olympics in Mexico City. As an athlete at SDSU, Emmerich was a Little All-American guard in football and helped SDSU to the 1939 North Central Conference title.
LAST TIME OUT
SDSU went south last Saturday for the USD Invitational hosted by South Dakota. Rich-Ann Archer elevated from sixth to fourth all-time at SDSU after her 60m dash personal best performance of 7.65. The Jackrabbit women long jumpers took first, second and third in the event. Jaiden Boomsma's jump of 18-04.50 was good enough to take first, Annie Wendt finished in second with a distance of 18-01.50 and Emma Stewart followed with a mark of 17-09.75. In the throws ring, Faith Leiseth took third in the shot and picked up a new PR with her throw of 46-04.75. Caitlin Thilges recorded a weight throw of 57-05.50 to give her third in the event, a new PR, and the ninth-best mark in SDSU history.
On the men's side, South Dakota State's all-time pole vault leader, Trent Francom, tied his own indoor PR with his vault of 17-05.00. Noah Huber won the men's shot put with a throw of 56-05.75, Trevor Begeman followed with a mark of 56-02.50 and Samuel Coil followed with a 55-00.25 marking to go 1-2-3 in the event for SDSU. In the weight throw, Samuel Coil won with a throw of 66-03.25 which also gave him a new PR in the event. Noah Huber finished third with a mark of 62-03.75.
