AMES, Iowa - South Dakota State women's basketball fell to 1-2 on the season Monday night with a 75-56 loss to No. 14 Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum.
The Jackrabbits were paced by a career-high 14 points from
Madysen Vlastuin. The Lennox native hit four three-pointers, including one with 5:37 to play in the first half to give the Jacks their final lead of the game, 24-22.
Tylee Irwin and
Paiton Burckhard also put up double figures for SDSU. Irwin tallied 12 points, five of which game from the free throw line, and Burckhard chipped in 10.
The Jackrabbits had a two-point lead after the first 10 minutes but were outscored 21-9 in the second period. After Vlastuin's go-ahead trey in the second quarter, the Jackrabbits were held to just one more basket in the final five minutes of the half. The Cyclones used a 14-2 run in the last 5:30 to lead 36-26 at the break.
Iowa State pushed its lead to as many as 20 in the third quarter and was 64 percent from the field in that time while holding the Jackrabbits to 25 percent.Â
SDSU came back within 10 on a Burckhard triple with 6:21 on the clock in the fourth but consecutive Jackrabbit turnovers helped ISU back to a 15-point margin.
Haleigh Timmer grabbed seven rebounds for SDSU and
Paige Meyer gave out four assists.
Kallie Theisen forced to steals and blocked two shots.
The Jackrabbits shot 34 percent overall on 19-of-56 shooting, compared to 42 percent by Iowa State.
NOTES
- South Dakota State moves to 14-33 all-time against ranked opponents.
- The last time SDSU started 1-2 was the 2019-20 season.
- The Jackrabbits 34 percent field goal shooting is well below their season average of 44 percent.
