South Dakota State returns to Frost Arena to host Montana State at 6 p.m. Thursday night.
The Jackrabbits head into Thursday with a 1-2 record after a season-opening win over Green Bay and losses at Mississippi State and No. 14 Iowa State. Paige Meyer and Tylee Irwin pace the Jackrabbits with 12.0 and 11.3 PPG, respectively. Paiton Burckhard chips in 9.3 points to go with a team-high 5.3 rebounds. Meyer gives out 3.7 assists per game.
Montana State is also 1-2 on the year. The Bobcats opened the season with a win against Carroll College before losing at Gonzaga and UNLV. Darian White scores 12.7 points per contest and grabs six rebounds to lead the Bobcats. She is the only player to average double-digit scoring. Lindsey Hein and Katelynn Limardo chip in an even six points per game each.
KEY STORYLINES
- After opening the season with a 70-49 win over Green Bay, South Dakota State dropped the next two contests at Mississippi State (71-76) and No. 14 Iowa State (56-75).
- Thursday is the fourth meeting between the teams. The Jackrabbits have won all three previous meetings.
- Freshman Paige Meyer is averaging 12.0 points and 4.0 assists, both team highs. She has started all three contests and posted a season-high 25 points at Mississippi State.
- Paiton Burckhard joined South Dakota State's 1,000-point club in at Mississippi State. She is the third active Jackrabbit to achieve the milestone, joining Myah Selland and Tylee Irwin on the list. State is one of just a handful of national programs with three or more 1,000 point scorers.
- Meyer's eight 3-point baskets this season ranks t-8th nationally among freshmen. She is 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
- State was picked to finish second in the 2021-22 Summit League Preseason Poll, splitting the first-place votes with South Dakota (20-18).
- Selland was tabbed as the Summit League Preseason Player of the Year and was recently named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List along with the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award Watch List, Naismith Trophy Watch List and Wooden Award Watch List.
- Burckhard, Irwin and Selland were named to the Preseason All-Summit League team.
