South Dakota State will spend its Thanksgiving Weekend in Florida for three games at the Gulf Coast Showcase Nov. 26-28 in Estero, Florida.
The Jackrabbits head into the weekend with a 2-3 record after a 67-55 loss at Creighton last week.
Paige Meyer and
Tylee Irwin pace the Jackrabbits with 12.4 and 11.0 PPG, respectively.
Paiton Burckhard chips in 8.8 points to go with a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Meyer gives out 4.2 assists per game.
The Jackrabbits will open the tournament with UMass at 10 a.m. CT Friday morning. The winner will advance to take on the winner of Kent State/UCLA. The loser will move into the
consolation bracket.
KEY STORYLINES
- The Jackrabbits are looking for their first win away from Frost Arena this season. SDSU is 0-3 on the road with losses to Mississippi State (71-76), No. 14 Iowa State (56-75) and Creighton (55-67)
- Paige Meyer is one of just two freshmen in NCAA DI to average at least 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest - the other is Rori Harmon (Texas). Meyer leads the team in points and and assists and ranks second in rebounding.
- The Jackrabbits have had four different leading scorers in their five games (Meyer 2x, Burckhard, Vlastuin, Timmer) and three players in double figures in four of five games.
- Meyer (12.4 PPG) and fellow freshman Haleigh Timmer (9.2 PPG) combine to score 21.6 points per game, 33 percent of the Jackrabbits' total scoring. Paiton Burckhard is the Jacks' top rebounder with 5.8 per game and is the fourth leading scorer at 8.0 per contest.
- Burckhard joined South Dakota State's 1,000-point club at Mississippi State. She is the third active Jackrabbit to achieve the milestone, joining Myah Selland and Tylee Irwin on the list. State is one of just a handful of national programs with three or more 1,000 point scorers
- State was picked to finish second in the 2021-22 Summit League Preseason Poll, splitting the first-place votes with South Dakota (20-18). Burckhard, Irwin and Selland were named to the Preseason All-Summit League team.
- Selland was tabbed as the Summit League Preseason Player of the Year and was recently named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List along with the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award Watch List, Naismith Trophy Watch List and Wooden Award Watch List.
