South Dakota State volleyball gave South Dakota all it could handle Friday night in the semifinal round of the Summit League Championship but fell in five to the defending tournament champions (25-20, 18-25, 20-25, 26-24, 16-18. The Jackrabbits led 16-15 in the deciding set before the Coyotes rattled off three straight points to take the match.
Down 24-21 in set four, South Dakota State rallied to hold off three USD match points and pull off a 26-24 win. The Jacks benefitted from two Coyote errors, two
Crystal Burk kills and a block by
Elyse Winter and
Ella Thompson to score five unanswered, forcing the fifth set.
Neither team led by more than two points in set five until the Coyotes used a 4-0 run to go up 13-10. The Jacks responded with a 4-0 run of their own to lead 14-13 and hold match point. USD overcame three Jackrabbit match points in the fifth to advance to Saturday's championship match.
Crystal Burk and
Chloe Stitt posted double-doubles for the Jackrabbits. Burk tallied 19 kills and 17 digs and Stitt added 16 and 14, respectively. Stitt took a season-high 61 swings in the match.
Four Jacks had double-digit digs, paced by
Tatum Pickar's 20, followed by Burk, Stitt and
Jasmine Weidemann (14). Weidemann and
Carly Wedel gave out 26 and 22 assists.
Tatum Pickar recorded four ace serves, including one during SDSU's fifth-set run. Thompson and Winter took part in four blocks each.
Elizabeth Juhnke led all players with 23 kills for USD.
NOTES
- SDSU is 5-3 in five-set matches this season.
- Crystal Burk has 15 double-doubles on the season and Chloe Stitt has eight. They each recorded a double-double in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches.
- The Jacks end the season with a 19-12 overall record, the most wins since the 2011 team went 25-11.
- They earned a spot in the Summit League postseason for the first time since 2010 and just the third time in program history.
- The Coyotes advance to their third title match in four seasons.
