SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State closed the two-day Coyote Extravaganza swimming and diving competition at Midco Aquatic Center by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in both the men's and women's divisions Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbit quartet of Elisabeth Timmer, Emma Walz, Emma Bachelder and Kelsey Kocon claimed the event in 3 minutes, 32.77 seconds. The relay event capped a successful weekend for Timmer, who went 4-for-4 in individual races, including capturing both the 100 freestyle (52.06 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:55.57) on Saturday.
Walz added a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke, 2:05.70, while Kocon placed sixth in 2:10.04. Bachelder finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.54 seconds.
As a team, SDSU went 2-3 in the six-team event. The Jackrabbit women claimed duals over St. Thomas (120-102) and Sioux Falls (129-80), while falling to host South Dakota (102-121), Northern Iowa (77-146) and St. Cloud State (110-112).
On the men's side, the South Dakota State foursome of Rafael Negri, Alex Kraft, Sam Johnson and Eric Anderson won the 400 freestyle relay finale in a time of 3:06.36. Earlier in the day, Anderson swam to victory in the individual 100 freestyle with a time of 46.95 seconds and was runner-up in the 50 freestyle, 21.07 seconds.
Kraft turned in a pair of runner-up finishes in the freestyle events, placing second in both the 200 (1:44.93) and the 100 (:46.95) as he was part of a pack of Jackrabbits who claimed five of the top seven spots in the latter event. Rafael Negri was fourth in the 100, 48.41 seconds, with Charles Sieglaff sixth in 48.70 seconds and Justin Wallar seventh in 48.85 seconds.
Other second-place efforts were turned in by Marcus Benson in the 200 backstroke, 1:58.01, and Austin Smith in the 100 individual medley, 53.62 seconds.
SDSU's other individual title on the day came in 3-meter diving as Spencer Fritze led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots with a winning score of 265.05 points. Zach Boyd took second with 249.40 points and Erik Thompson was third with 212.70 points.
The Jackrabbit men ended the meet with a 2-1 record in the dual format. SDSU downed Summit League foes St. Thomas (160-63) and SouthDakota (121-99), while dropping a narrow decision to St. Cloud State (111-113).
