OMAHA, Neb. – Host Omaha plated multiple runs in the first inning of both games of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Friday and went to sweep South Dakota State by scores of 6-1 and 7-1 at Tal Anderson Field.
The Mavericks improved to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in league play. SDSU dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in The Summit League.
GAME 1: OMAHA 6, SDSU 1
The Mavericks scored three times in the opening inning and rode the right arm of starting pitcher Joey Machado to the victory.
Omaha scored the first run of the game on an errant throw on a steal attempt and added two runs later in the frame on an RBI single by Brett Bonar and sacrifice fly by Brayden Eckhout.
Machado went the first six innings and allowed only one hit while striking out 10 and walking three.
Jackrabbit starter Adam Mazur settled into a groove of his own after the first inning, allowing only one baserunner – via an error – over the next six frames. The sophomore right-hander retired 14 batters in a row in one stretch en route to seven strikeouts.
SDSU got on the board in the seventh as Hackman singled for his second hit of the game to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error. Hackman moved to third on a single by Jess Bellows and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Sagedahl.
The Jackrabbits loaded the bases again in the eighth on three consecutive two-out walks, but Omaha closer Jacob Mohler ended the threat with a groundout. Mohler pitched around an error in the ninth to finish off the save.
Omaha added to its lead against after Mazur came out to start the eighth, hanging another three-spot on the board. Ryan Doran, Bonar and Eckhout all notched singles to drive in the Maverick runs.
Bonar was the lone Omaha player with two hits as they out-hit the Jackrabbits, 7-3.
GAME 2: OMAHA 7, SDSU 1
Omaha plated runs in each of the first three innings and Spencer Koelewyn carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Mavericks completed the sweep.
Chris Esposito drove in the first three runs for Omaha, connecting on a two-run home run to left in the first inning and adding a run-scoring single in the second.
In the third inning, Grant Goldston led off with a double against Jackrabbit starter Ryan Bourassa and scored on a base hit by Masen Prososki.
Omaha tacked on three more runs against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the sixth, two of which scored on hits by Harrison Denk and Mike Boeve, the latter of whom was 3-for-3 to pace the Mavericks' 12-hit attack.
After Drake Frazier walked to lead off the sixth inning, Drew Beazley broke up the Koelewyn no-hit bid with a double down the left-field line. Frazier later scored on a sacrifice fly by Landon Badger.
Bellows tallied the other SDSU hit, a one-out single in the seventh.
Koelewyn struck out nine and walked five over 6 1/3 innings.
UP NEXT
SDSU and Omaha are scheduled to play the third game of their three-game series at 3 p.m. Saturday.
