INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced the participants for the 2021 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Preliminary competitions on Thursday, May 20. South Dakota State has nine athletes declared as entries into the West Preliminary hosted by Texas A&M at E.B. Cushing Stadium beginning on May 26.

Those representing the Jackrabbits are Ellie Friesen, Leah Hansen, Trevor Begeman, Sam Coil, Trent Francom, Coby Hilton, Tyson Jenkins, Reid Pierzinski and Joshua Yeager. The nine athletes are among the top 48 declared entries for individual events and top 24 in relays in the West Region. The top 12 finishers in each event at the West and East Preliminary Rounds will advance to compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 9-12.

The leading entries for the Jackrabbits are Coby Hilton, who was named the Most Outstanding Performer at last week's Summit League Championships and Trent Francom, who was an indoor second team All-American in the pole vault. Hilton will run the 100 and 200 meters and he will come into the meet ranked 19th and 11th, respectively. His marks of 10.23 and 20.57 in those events are also school records. Francom will come into the meet ranked 6^th (tied with 2 others) with a best vault of 18-04.75 (5.61m). He is ranked seventh nationally.

Joshua Yeager, who was the Summit League Championship high point scorer, also qualified in the 5000 meters where he would have been ranked 22nd, but elected to focus exclusively on the steeplechase.

All of the Jackrabbit qualifiers either established school records or are ranked second all-time at State.
