After another successful tournament weekend in Toledo the South Dakota State University volleyball team (6-2) makes its return to Brookings for the second home tournament of the season. The Jacks host the
Jackrabbit Classic presented by Super 8 of Brookings Friday and Saturday at Frost Arena.
SDSU is off to its best start since the 2012 season when the Jackrabbits started off the year 7-2. Last weekend saw the Jacks fall to Toledo in five sets on Friday night but won a five-set thriller against Youngstown State Saturday afternoon. They closed out the Blue and Gold Tournament with a sweep over Valparaiso.
The Jacks are set for two matches on Friday against Southeastern Louisiana at 11 a.m. and Idaho at 7 p.m. The team will close out the tournament on Saturday against Drake at 1 p.m.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: The three opponents the Jacks face this weekend hold a combined record of 4-14 so far this season.
Southeastern Louisiana
The Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana put together their first winning season since 2002 last spring and earned themselves the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. They are led by reigning Southland Conference Coach of the Year Jeremy White, who led his team to a 12-win improvement after his first season in 2019.
Things were trending in the right direction, but so far this season, the Lady Lions have struggled. They hold an 0-7 record still looking for their first win. They played at the UNM Classic this past weekend and lost all three of their matches in three and four sets.
Idaho
The Vandals are coming off a week without matches after pulling out of the Thin Air Classic last weekend due to COVID-19 protocols.
Head coach Debbie Buchanan is in her 22nd season leading her squad and hope to finish with an above .500 record for the first time since 2018. The Vandals completed their shortened spring season with a 6-11 record overall and 5-9 in conference play.
Drake
The Drake Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll just behind Illinois State after having a historic spring season. The Bulldogs finished second in the MVC for the first time since 1996 and will look to repeat that success in 2021.
The Bulldogs return nearly their entire roster from a season ago, which saw them go 13-7. Haley Bush is the reigning MVC Player of the Year and was the second Bulldog ever to win the award. Drake most recently went 2-1 at the North Dakota Tournament and hold a 2-3 overall record heading into the Jackrabbit Classic.
LAST WEEK: SDSU went 2-1 at the Blue and Gold Tournament while picking up wins against Youngstown State and Valparaiso and losing to host team Toledo
SDSU 2, Toledo 3
The Jacks held a 2-1 lead in the match but dropped sets four and five for the loss. SDSU started the match well, jumping out to an 8-3 lead and capped off the first set with a
Crystal Burk kill. SDSU and Toledo traded sets in the second and third with the Jacks looking strong. In the fourth, the teams were knotted at 22 before Toledo scored three straight points to win the set.
Chloe Stitt had 20 kills and Burk added 16.
SDSU 3, Youngstown State 2
The Jacks picked up their first win on the weekend in a thriller against the Penguins. They dropped set one 23-25 before picking up the next to take a 2-1 lead. The Penguins kept the Jacks at bay in the fourth as they came within a few points several times, but Youngstown won the set.
The fifth set saw both teams knotted up at 8-8 and later 12-12 before SDSU scored three straight points to win the match. Burk again led the team with 23 kills, with Stitt adding 18.
Carly Wedel notched a career-high in the match as she added 63 assists.
SDSU 3, Valparaiso 0
The Jacks dominated for two sets with 25-14 and 25-18 wins. The third set was more competitive as Valparaiso jumped out to an early lead. They led by one at 23-22, but SDSU finished the match on a 3-0 run to clinch the set 25-23 and the sweep.
Burk paced the Jacks with 18 kills and three blocks. Freshman
Ella Thompson adding six kills and six blocks.
