The South Dakota State volleyball team hosted day one of the Jackrabbit Classic Friday at Frost Arena and came away with two wins.
The Jacks move to 8-2 on the season, the best start for the team since an 8-2 start in 2011. The tournament, presented by Super 8 of Brookings, features host SDSU along with visitors Southeastern Louisiana, Idaho and Drake. The Jackrabbits beat Southeastern Louisiana 3-2 in the morning match (25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-9) and swept Drake (25-19, 25-11, 25-16) in the evening matchup.
SDSU 3, SLU 2
The Jacks got off to a hot start against the Lions, hitting .500 in set one and totaling 17 kills.
The sides went back-and-forth from the service line late in the set, going four-straight points with serving errors. At 23-19, the Jacks used a kill each from
Carly Wedel and
Sydney Andrews to put the set away.
The Jacks struggled through sets two and three. At 8-8 in the second set, SLU scored seven-straight points to take a 15-8 lead. The Jacks got back within four at 19-15 but could not make up enough ground. Sets four and five belonged to the Jackrabbits, however. SDSU jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth and held off the Lions from there. Up 12-10, the Jacks went on a 13-4 run to end the set and tie the match up at 2-2.
SDSU gave up the first two points of the final set but took control from there, scoring five unanswered to take a 5-2 lead. The Lions pulled back to within one, trailing 7-8, but managed only two more points as the Jacks dominated the later part of the set and picked up the win. SDSU held the Lions to a negative hitting percentage in the set.
Crystal Burk had 21 kills at a .356 attack rate for the Jackrabbits. She was second on the team in digs with 12.
Sydney Andrews,

Defensively,

SDSU 3, Idaho 0
The Jacks took care of business in the second match of the day, sweeping Idaho in an hour and fifteen minutes. SDSU hit .289 in the match and held the Vandals to just .012.
The Jackrabbits trailed early in first but took the lead at 9-8 thanks to back-to-back service aces from
Carly Wedel. The Vandals kept things close until 15-15 when the Jacks went on a 4-0 run to lead 19-15. It was all Jacks from there in the six-point set win.
SDSU put its foot on the gas and never looked back in sets two and three. The Jackrabbits went on two 5-0 scoring runs in set two and another 5-0 run in the third.
