South Dakota State returned to Frost this week to host St. Thomas and Western Illinois in Summit League action. After an 88-47 win over St. Thomas Thursday night, the Jacks turn their attention to Western Illinois Saturday afternoon.
The Jacks are 11-8 overall and 7-1 in the conference while Western Illinois enters at 11-6 on the season and 2-4 in the Summit League.
Myah Selland took over as the Jackrabbits' leading scorer with 10.7 PPG after a 16-point performance Thursday. She is followed by
Paige Meyer, who averages 10.2 points and 3.9 assists per game.
Paiton Burckhard averages 9.6 points per game and had a season-high 16 points at Omaha last week.
Tori Nelson (9.4 PPG) and
Tylee Irwin (9.3 PPG) round out the Jackrabbits' starting lineup.
Kallie Theisen comes off the bench to lead SDSU in rebounding (4.9 RPG) and blocked shots (1.3 BPG).
Danni Nichols puts up 17.9 points per game to lead the Leathernecks and ranks third in the conference. Jada Thorpe contributes 12.8 points on average and Evan Zars (11.6 PPG) and Elizabeth Lutz (10.6) also chip in double figures. Zars tops the Summit's rebounding chart with 8.9 boards per contest.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State moved to 11-8 on the season and 7-1 in the Summit League with an 88-47 win over St. Thomas Thursday at Frost Arena.
- The Jackrabbits are seeking their fifth consecutive home victory Saturday. SDSU is currently 6-2 in games at Frost Arena this season.
- Head coach Aaron Johnston won his 200th career regular season Summit League game Thursday and is now 200-36 in those contests. He is the first Summit coach to reach the milestone.
- Myah Selland scores 10.7 PPG overall to lead a very balanced SDSU offense. Paige Meyer adds 10.2 PPG.
- Myah Selland had her best all-around game of the season Thursday with a 16-point, 8 assist, 4 rebound performance against St. Thomas. She was 7-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from the 3-point line.
- All five Jackrabbit starters are averaging 9.5+ points in conference games (Selland - 10.9 PPG, Meyer, 10.8, Burckhard - 10.1, Irwin - 9.9, Nelson - 9.8). The Jacks are the only team to have all five starters rank in the top-25 of the Summit scoring chart for conference games.
- SDSU set a new program record by shooting 71 percent (10-for-14) from beyond the arc in Thursday's win.
The Jacks rank 10th in the nation in 3-point shooting this season at 38 percent. Paige Meyer (22-for-42) and Tori Nelson (20-for-39) are both better than 50 percent from deep.
- The SDSU defense has held opponents to fewer than 50 points in each of the last three contests.
- Paige Meyer is the only freshman in the country averaging 10.2 PPG and 3.9 APG while shooting better than 41 percent from the field. She is 46.5 percent in FG shooting and also contributes 3.8 rebounds, on average.
- Tori Nelson's .646 field goal percentage in conference games leads the Summit League. Her overall percentage of .563 also ranks first in the conference. She has put up 9+ points in 11 of the last 13 contests and has knocked down at least one trey in all but three games this season.
- Myah Selland has scored in every appearance of her career, 99 games, and put up more than 10 points in 71 of those contests. She is averaging 10.7 PPG and 21 minutes in her 12 appearances this season.
- Tylee Irwin continues to climb SDSU's career games chart. Saturday's game against WIU will be No. 141 for the 5th-year senior, second on the Jacks' all-time list. Macy Miller is the program's leader with 144 career games played. The NCAA record is 157 career games.
