BROOKINGS, S.D. –Â
Laney Murdzek connected on a shot that found the back of the net in the 77th minute to put South Dakota State ahead, 1-0, over Oral Roberts and the goal served as the difference as the Jackrabbit women's soccer team picked up a Summit League victory at Fishback Soccer Park on Friday.Â
Â
A foul drawn by
Maya Hansen in the 77th minute gave the Jackrabbits a free kick roughly 40 yards from the goal.
Kaycee Manding served up a pass into the box and an Oral Roberts defender attempted to clear the ball out with a header. Instead the ball landed in front of Murdzek just outside the top of the box who sent a shot over the head of Golden Eagle goalkeeper Louisa Ramsauer to put the Jacks into the lead.Â
Â
"I thought the delivery was really good and we talk about just being ready for the clearance," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Usually, if there is one it's not going to go very far and (Laney) was in the right spot. She showed great composure to tuck that one away."
Â
South Dakota State kept the pressure on Oral Roberts over the remaining 13 minutes.
Karlee Manding and
Maya Hansen each produced shots for the Jackrabbits while keeping the Golden Eagles off the shot chart to keep the score knotted at 1-0 for the final margin.Â
Â
"I think they're a very good team and it was a good game," Thompson said. "I think really the biggest thing for us was the mindset our players had in the moment we lost the ball. I thought we put them under immediate pressure and that forced them to turn the ball back over."
Â
The Jackrabbits outshot the Golden Eagles 13-6 in the match and had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Hailee Fischer made two first-half saves for the Jacks and
Jocelyn Tanner recorded three saves in the second half. Murdzek,
Karlee Manding and
Maya Hansen each had a team-high two shots.Â
Â
Ramsauer had six saves for Oral Roberts in the defeat.
