FARGO, N.D. - South Dakota State volleyball picked up a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23) win over North Dakota State Tuesday night at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The victory gets the Jackrabbits back in the win column after a five-match losing streak.
SDSU moves to 11-13 on the season and 5-7 in the Summit League. NDSU's loss is only its third of the conference season as the Bison are now 7-3 in league action (17-8 overall).
The biggest difference in the final stats came at the serving line, where the Jackrabbits recorded 10 aces compared to just one by the Bison.
Ella Thompson led all played with four aces, then the Jacks got two apiece from
Crystal Burk,
Masa Scheierman and
Elyse Winter.
The rest of the box score was fairly even. NDSU had the edge in kills (57-56), assists (54-51) and digs (81-64) while SDSU led in total attacks (173-159) and total blocks (11-10). The Jacks committed four serving errors and two blocking errors compared to three serving errors and one blocking error by the Bison.
SDSU's offense was powered by a match-high 22 kills from Burk, who also had 14 digs and two blocks to go with her two aces. Scheierman added 10 kills, three digs and a block, followed by Thompson's nine kills, five blocks and four digs.
Sydney Andrews paced the defense with six blocks on the night. She also had four kills and an assist.
Elyse Winter also took part in five blocks while chipping in seven kills.
Jadyn Makovicka notched 19 digs for SDSU. Burk's 14 was next, followed by eight digs for
Katie Van Egdom and six for
Alia Schlimgen. Setter
Raegen Reilly gave out 37 assists and chipped in five digs and two kills.
NDSU's Ali Hinze was one of four Bison with at least 10 kills. She was joined in double figures by Ally Barth (13), Michelle Glover (11) and Syra Tanchin (10).
The Jackrabbits bounced back from a 5-1 deficit in the opening set and used a four-point run to lead 16-14 over the Bison. Andrews took part in three consecutive points during the stretch, notching a solo block, a kill, and then teaming up with Winter for another block. SDSU maintained its edge from there and ended the set with yet another block by Andrews and Winter.
NDSU dug themselves out of a 5-1 hole in the second set with a 9-1 run to go up by four at 18-14. Scheierman put down back-to-back kills to help the Jacks hold off three set points before Hinze put down a kill to even the match at 1-1.
SDSU also led early on in the third set but this time would not give up the advantage. Two blocks by Andrews gave SDSU a 6-2 lead. The sides traded kills through the middle of the set before a pair of Bison errors pushed SDSU to a 17-12 advantage. Thompson notched an ace to put the Jacks ahead 23-17, then Burk had a kill to make it 24-17. SDSU went on to win 25-17.
The final set was tight from start to finish as neither team led by more than three the whole way through. NDSU took the only three-point lead of the set on three straight errors by SDSU. After a timeout the Jacks swung the momentum back in their direction with a 6-1 run for the 16-14 lead. The Bison regained the edge at 20-18 before SDSU ended the match outscoring NDSU 7-3.

- The Jackrabbits upped their season ace total to 149, which ranks second in the Summit League. Crystal Burk and Elyse Winter lead the way with 25 aces each, followed by 22 from Raegen Reilly and 21 from Ella Thompson.
- Crystal Burk has 20 double-doubles this season.
- SDSU sits sixth in the Summit League standings with six matches remaining in the regular season. The top six teams qualify for the Summit League postseason tournament.
