The South Dakota State men's basketball team opens the 2022-23 season at Akron to face the Zips for the first time on Monday with the game tipping off at 6 p.m. CST. The Jackrabbits make their debut following one of their most historic years in program history against an Akron squad coming off a Mid-American Conference Championship and NCAA tournament appearance.
The Jacks made their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, all of which have come in the last 11 seasons, after a 2021-22 campaign that featured SDSU going 21-0 in Summit League competition. SDSU and Murray State were the only teams to run the table in their respective leagues.
SDSU went on a 21-game winning streak which was the longest active stretch in Division I when the Jacks lost to Providence in the NCAA Tournament. The Jackrabbits' 30 games won overall were a school and league record.
The Jackrabbits were highly efficient from 3-point range a season ago, setting a program record and leading Division I with a 44.5% clip.
Charlie Easley,
Alex Arians,
Baylor Scheierman and
Matt Mims all recorded top 10 single-season percentages for SDSU from deep.
The Jacks were featured on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll throughout the 2021-22 season and finished the season fourth behind Gonzaga, Murray State and Saint Mary's. SDSU also received votes in the AP Top 25 poll for five straight weeks heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Despite earning their fifth consecutive regular season title, and winning their eighth in the last 10 years, the Jackrabbits were picked second in the 2022-23 Summit League Preseason Poll behind Oral Roberts.
SDSU will bolster its depth following the departures of All-Summit League and conference MVPs
Douglas Wilson and Scheierman. To make up for the losses, six players in the rotation return along with the addition of five newcomers.
Luke Appel and Zeke Mayo each received All-Summit League Preseason First Team recognition. Appel was the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2021-22, while Mayo was selected to the Summit's All-Newcomer Team.
