BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team led for less than seven minutes against Oral Roberts Monday night but came away with an 83-80 win over the Golden Eagles at Frost Arena to open the Summit League season.
After a tough first 20 minutes, the Jackrabbits came out of the locker room to score 53 second-half points - 24 of which came from the free throw line - and pull off the win.
The Jacks improve to 8-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Summit League. Oral Roberts is now 3-9 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.
Myah Selland notched her sixth straight double-digit game with 15 points for the Jackrabbits. The redshirt senior connected on four field goals and knocked down 7-of-8 free throw attempts. Selland was one of three Jacks with a team-high seven rebounds, gave out three assists and had a steal.
Paiton Burckhard contributed 12 points, all in the second half, and had seven rebounds to go with a steal and an assist. She went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Tori Nelson rounded out the double digit scorers. She chipped in 10 points on a 3-for-6 effort from the field and 4-for-4 night from the charity stripe.
The Jacks' night was highlighted by the much-anticipated return of
Paige Meyer. The sophomore scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished three assists and forced three steals in her first appearance for SDSU since suffering a knee injury on February 26 of last season.
SDSU trailed 37-30 at the halftime break but put together a strong second half. The Jacks went 15-for-17 from the free throw line during the third quarter, helping them work back to a one-point lead late in the period, and trailed by four with 10 minutes to play.
Haleigh Timmer put up the first five points of the fourth quarter to put State up by one again. The sides battled from there with four more lead changes over the next few minutes. Burckhard scored the Jacks' final go-ahead bucket with 4:17 on the clock and SDSU stretched its lead to six in the final minutes.
Kallie Theisen and
Madysen Vlastuin chipped in eight points apiece for SDSU. Theisen had seven rebounds.
Oral Roberts got 25 points from Hannah Cooper.and nine rebounds from Makenna Winans.

- SDSU moves to 27-6 all-time against Oral Roberts. The Jacks have won 22 straight meetings with the Golden Eagles,
- The Jacks' 28 free throw makes and 37 free throw attempts are the highest single-game marks for SDSU since going 33-for-41 against North Dakota on January 16, 2020.
- Head coach Aaron Johnston won his 550th career game against Oral Roberts. He is now 550-184 as a head coach.
