South Dakota State opens the 2022 season at the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa this weekend. SDSU is looking for another year of success on the diamond after a historic 2021 campaign that saw the Jacks finish 43-8 (21-1 SUMMIT) and win its first-ever regular season and tournament Summit League titles. The Jacks made the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history and picked up their first NCAA Regional win in the process, defeating Stanford 7-1 in the first game of the Fayetteville Regional.
KEY STORYLINES
- SDSU returns all nine all-Summit players from a season ago, including Player of the Year Cylie Halvorson, Pitcher of the Year Tori Kniesche and Freshman of the Year Grace Glanzer.
- SDSU ranked ninth nationally in slugging percentage (.560) and 14th in ERA (1.87) in the nation last season, one of three schools in the country to rank in the top 15 in both categories.
- SDSU broke single season program records in triples, home runs, slugging percentage, ERA, shutouts and tied the school record for wins in a season (43) in 2021.
- Cylie Halvorson shattered the school home run record, ranked 15th nationally and led the league with 19 homers. She averaged .352 en route to being named to the NFCA All-Region Second Team.
- Cylie Halvorson batted in 59 runs which was the second-most in a season in school history, led the Summit League and ranked seventh in the country.
- Tori Kniesche was named to the NFCA All-Region First Team in 2021 after she posted a 1.57 ERA, which was the sixth-best mark in school history. Kniesche allowed just 3.50 hits per seven innings, the eighth-best mark in the country.
- Grace Glanzer was named to the NFCA All-Region Third Team after she posted a 1.78 ERA, which ranked tenth all-time in SDSU single season history, and was second in the Summit League, only behind teammate Tori Kniesche.
- 2021 Summit League Championship MVP Jocelyn Carillo paced the Jackrabbits at the plate with a .418 batting average and 1.303 on-base percentage last season.
