CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - South Dakota State softball opened the 2022 season with a split on day one of the Doc Halvorson UNI-Dome Tournament. The Jackrabbits started the day with an extra-innings victory over Northern Iowa before falling to Drake.
Game 1 vs. Northern Iowa - W, 2-1
The Jackrabbits' 2-1 win over the Panthers came courtesy of a pair of runs from
Lindsey Culver. The sophomore put the Jacks on the board with a solo home run in the second inning for the 1-0 lead. Culver then scored SDSU's winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth.
Following Culver's solo homer, SDSU looked to add to its lead when it loaded the bases in the fifth frame. With two outs, Cheyenne Masterson reached on a single, followed by
Rozelyn Carrillo reaching on an error and
Peyton Daugherty being hit by a pitch. The Panthers managed to get out of the jam, however, with a strikeout to keep the Jacks' lead at one.
The Panthers forced extra innings with a homer of their own in the bottom of the seventh. After a scoreless eighth inning, Culver stole home in the ninth and SDSU held off UNI in the bottom half for the win.
Tori Kniesche gets the win for the Jackrabbits with 11 strikeouts while giving up five walks and just two hits.
Rozelyn Carrillo knocked two hits.
Game 2 vs. Drake - L, 4-11
SDSU dropped its second contest of the day 4-11 to Drake. A three-run Bulldog homer in the fourth gave Drake a 4-1 lead and the Bulldogs tacked on two more in the fifth to go up 6-1.
Culver hit her second homer of the day, a three-run shot to left field, to bring the Jackrabbits back within two scores, but the Jackrabbit offense could not overcome the deficit.
Culver was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs to lead the Jacks.
Emma Osmundson also had two hits while
Rozelyn Carrillo,
Brooke Dumont and
Allison Yoder added one knock apiece.
Grace Glanzer is tagged with the loss. She gave up seven hits and struck out two batters while watching seven.
