CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - South Dakota State softball went 1-1 on day two of the Doc Halvorson UNI-Dome Tournament Saturday on the campus of Northern Iowa. After dropping game one 3-8 to Iowa State, the Jackrabbits rallied to beat Northern Iowa 9-3 in the second game of the day.
Lindsey Culver paced the Jacks with five hits on the day, followed by
Peyton Daugherty and
Rozelyn Carrillo with four apiece.
Tori Kniesche and
Grace Glanzer started one game each in the circle. Kniesche struck out six batters in the loss to go with six hits, seven walks and eight runs allowed. Glanzer threw all seven innings of game two, striking out nine while giving up six hits, four walks and two runs.
Game 1 vs. Iowa State - L, 3-8
Iowa State put five runs on the board in the first inning, including a grand slam, for an early lead and tacked on three more in the top of the fourth to build a margin the Jackrabbits could not overcome.
SDSU cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo homer by
Rozelyn Carrillo and a two-run shot by
Cylie Halvorson to make it a 9-3 game but that would wrap up all scoring for the remainder of the contest.
The Jacks did outhit the Cyclones 8-6 with no ISU player tallying more than one hit. Culver went 3-for-3 for SDSU with one run scored. Daugherty added two hits. Ellie Spelhaug was the Cyclones' winning pitcher, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out four in four innings of work.
Game 2 vs. Northern Iowa - W, 9-3
The Jackrabbits picked up their second win over the Panthers in as many days in the team's second contest of the day. After UNI went up 2-0 with a homer in each of the first two frames, SDSU responded with nine unanswered runs for the win.
Mia Jarecki reached first base on a dropped third strike to open the third inning, followed by an
Allison Yoder walk and
Peyton Daugherty single, loading the bases.
Emma Osmundson singled on the next at-bat to drive in Jarecki and Yoder, tying the game. Halvorson knocked a sacrifice fly to score Daugherty and give the Jacks the 3-2 lead.
With Culver on second in the fifth inning,
Rozelyn Carrillo doubled to plate Culver and add to the SDSU lead.
A five-run seventh inning for the Jacks really put the game out of reach for the Panthers. Osmundson led the frame off with a solo homer to push State's lead to 5-2.
Brooke Dumont and
Kelsey Lenox also tallied one RBI each in the inning and Jarecki added two to round out the scoring.
UNI got one run back in the bottom of the seventh for the 9-3 final score.
Osmundson's three RBIs led all players. Carrillo had three hits. Kailyn Packard takes the loss for Northern Iowa. She gave up seven hits, four earned runs and one walk while striking out six.
NOTES
- The Jackrabbits' next win will be Coach Krista Wood's 200th as SDSU's head coach. She is currently 199-153.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits will take on Nebraska at 9 a.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament.
