The South Dakota State women return home to host Oral Roberts and Kansas City in the final games of the regular season Thursday and Saturday. The Jackrabbits enter the weekend 19-8 with a 15-1 Summit League mark. Two wins this week will clinch at least a share of SDSU's eighth regular season Summit League title.
State's balanced offense is led by
Myah Selland, who scores 13.4 points per game. She is joined in double figures by
Paige Meyer (10.9 PPG),
Tori Nelson (10.9 PPG) and
Paiton Burckhard (10.2 PPG). Selland also contributes 4.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists on average. Selland posted back-to-back 20-point games last week. The redshirt junior scored 20 points at Western Illinois to go with five rebounds, four steals and three assists and followed that performance with 24 points, four rebounds and three assists at St. Thomas.
Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.3 SPG) leader. She ranks first in the Summit League in field goal percentage, second in assists and third in assists/turnover ratio. Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.4 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.1 assists per game.
Kallie Theisen blocks 1.1 shots a night.
Oral Roberts is 15-12 on the season and 10-6 in the Summit League. The Golden Eagles have won three straight games, most recently an 89-73 victory over North Dakota. Tirzah Moore scores 14.7 points per game and averages 6.1 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, both team highs. The freshman also blocks 1.0 shots per night. Katie Scott and Keni Jo Lippe add 9.6 and 9.4 points per night, respectively. Hannah Cooper leads ORU in assists with 2.7 per contest while Ariel Walker records 1.8 steals on average.
Kansas City enters its final regular season road trip at 22-5 overall with a 12-4 Summit League record. The Roos' only Summit losses this season have come to South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota and Oral Roberts. Since its loss to the Fighting Hawks on Jan. 22, KC has won nine consecutive games. Naomie Alnatas scores 18.7 points and gives out 5.3 assists per contest to lead the KC squad. Her assists average leads the Summit League while her scoring output ranks second. Brooklyn McDavid averages 15.8 points per contest for the Roos, followed by 9.6 points by Paige Bradford. Bradford grabs 8.6 rebounds per game, ranking third in the Summit League.average.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State won its 11th straight game Saturday afternoon, an 83-42 victory over St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Jackrabbits are 19-8 on the season and 15-1 in the Summit League with two games remaining.
- The Jackrabbits are receiving votes in the USA Today / WBCA Top-25 Poll this week and are up to 7th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25.
- Myah Selland scores 13.8 PPG overall to lead a very balanced SDSU offense. The redshirt junior was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team last week for the second time in her career.
- Selland is joined in double figures by Paige Meyer (10.9), Tori Nelson (10.3) and Paiton Burckhard (10.2).
- SDSU ranks second in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage this season (39.1%) and third in overall field goal shooting (47.9%). Both clips lead the Summit League.
- As of Thursday, all five Jackrabbit starters are averaging 9+ points in conference games - Selland (14.2), Meyer (11.6), Nelson (11.2), Burckhard (10.9), and (Irwin 9.2).
- Paige Meyer is the only freshman in the country averaging 10.5+ PPG and 4+ APG while shooting better than 50% from the field.
- Paige Meyer (61.0%) and Tori Nelson (60.2%) hold the top two spots on the Summit's field goal percentage chart in conference games. They are the only two shooting 60% or higher.
- Tori Nelson's consistency has been a key factor for the Jacks' offense. The sophomore is 60% from the field in Summit League games and has scored 9+ points in all but three conference contests.
- Myah Selland has scored in every appearance of her career, 107 games, and put up more than 10 points in 78 of those contests. She ranks 13th on the Jacks' all-time scoring chart with 1,428 career points.
- Tylee Irwin, Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard have all scored more than 1,000 career points and tallied more than 500 career rebounds for South Dakota State. SDSU is one of just a handful of programs nationally with three or more active players to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
- With two wins this week, the Jackrabbits will clinch at least a share of the Summit League regular season title for the the eighth time in program history. State was picked to finish second in the 2021-22 Summit League Preseason Poll, splitting the first-place votes with South Dakota (20-18).
