SIOUX FALLS -
Luke Appel won the final TicketSmarter Summit League Men's Basketball Player of the Week award of the season, league officials announced Monday.
The junior forward from Marshalltown, Iowa, earned the accolade based in large part on his double-double in Thursday's 106-102 overtime victory at Oral Roberts.
Appel scored a career-high 41 points on 16-of-20 shooting, hit both of this three pointers while making 7-of-9 free throws. He also hauled in 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of playing time, recording his first double-double as a Jackrabbit. His two free throws with one second remaining tied the game, leading to overtime and eventually an SDSU win.
How impressive was Appel's accomplishment Thursday? The 41 points is the most by a Summit League player this season. He also became the 20th player since 1996-97 to score 40 points in game in which he did not start. Going one step further, Appel is the only Division I men's basketball player to record a 40-point double-double in at least 25 seasons.
Appel tallied eight points and four rebounds Saturday in an 86-75 win at Kansas City, helping the Jackrabbits finish Summit League play 18-0. It's the first time in the 40-year history of the league a team finished the regular season with an undefeated conference record.
For the two-game road sweep, Appel averaged 24.5 points and 7.0 rebounds en route to his first Summit League honor.
South Dakota State (27-4) opens up the Summit League Tournament as the No. 1 seed, facing eighth-seeded Omaha Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
