GAME 24: SOUTH DAKOTA STATE vs DENVER |
South Dakota State hosts Denver and Omaha in Summit League action at Frost Arena this week. This is the second meeting of the season for SDSU with both the Pioneers and the Mavericks.
The Jackrabbits are 15-8 (11-1 Summit League) and sit tied for first place in the conference standings with six games remaining. SDSU enters the weekend on a seven-game win streak with its most recent victory coming over South Dakota.
Five Jackrabbits are averaging more than 9.5 points per contest, paced by
Myah Selland's 11.6 PPG. Selland is joined in double figures by
Paige Meyer (10.7 PPG) and
Paiton Burckhard (10.4 PPG).
Tori Nelson (9.8 PPG) and
Tylee Irwin (9.5 PPG) round out the starting lineup. All five are ranked in the top-25 of the Summit League's conference games scoring chart.
Meyer gives out 4.2 assists overall and tallies 1.2 steals on average, both team highs. The freshman's 4.8 assists per game in Summit contests ranks first in the league. Burckhard and
Kallie Theisen lead the Jacks on the boards with 5.1 and 4.8 rebounds per contest, respectively. Theisen is SDSU's blocks leader with 1.3 per game.
Denver is 8-16 overall with a 3-10 Summit mark. The Pioneers most recently beat North Dakota State 62-48 Saturday. Uju Ezeudu averages 17.7 points per game and 19.0 points in Summit League games, which ranks third among all conference players. She also grabs 8.6 rebounds (8.8 in Summit action), which is second on the league chart. Meghan Boyd chips in 12.2 points for the Pioneers and Anna Jackson adds 9.5 PPG. Indeya Sanders' dishes 4.1 assists per game.
Omaha enters the weekend at 6-16 overall and 2-11 in the Summit. The Mavericks have lost eight straight games, most recently a 74-61 home defeat to North Dakota. Omaha is paced by Mariah Murdie's 11.1 points, 6.9 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Elena Pilakouta also averages double digits, 10.7 PPG, while Josie Filer pulls down 6.8 rebounds on average.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State enters Thursday at 15-8 overall and 11-1 in the Summit League. The Jacks are on a seven-game win streak with their most recent win coming over South Dakota at Frost last weekend.
- Senior Tylee Irwin will play in her 145th career game Thursday, moving her into sole possession of first place on the Jacks' all-time appearances chart. She passes Macy Miller (144, 2014-19) on the list.
- The Jackrabbits currently rank second in the nation in field goal shooting (47.4%) and seventh in 3-point shooting (37.9%).
- Myah Selland scores 11.6 PPG overall to lead a very balanced SDSU offense. She is joined in double figures by Paige Meyer (10.7) and Paiton Burckhard (10.4 PPG).
- All five Jackrabbit starters are averaging 10+ points in conference games - Selland (12.1), Meyer (11.6), Burckhard (11.5), Nelson (10.5), (Irwin 10.0).
- Tori Nelson (59.5%) and Paige Meyer (58.9%) hold the No. 2 and 3 spots on the Summit's field goal percentage chart in conference games.
- The Jacks are the only team to have all five starters rank in the top-25 of the Summit scoring chart for conference games.
- Paige Meyer is the only freshman in the country averaging 10.7 PPG and 4.1 APG while shooting better than 42% from the field. She is 50% in FG shooting overall (59% in Summit games), 50% from beyond the arc and also contributes 3.7 rebounds, on average.
- Tori Nelson's .555 overall field goal percentage and .595 field goal percentage in conference games rank first and second in the Summit League, respectively. She has put up 9+ points in 14 of the last 17 contests and has knocked down at least one trey in all but five games this season.
- Myah Selland has scored in every appearance of her career, 103 games, and put up more than 10 points in 74 of those contests. She is averaging 11.6 PPG this seson and needs just three points Thursday to move into SDSU's top-20 all time.
- Tylee Irwin, Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard have all scored more than 1,000 career points and tallied more than 500 career rebounds for South Dakota State. SDSU is one of just a handful of programs nationally with three or more active players to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
- State was picked to finish second in the 2021-22 Summit League Preseason Poll, splitting the first-place votes with South Dakota (20-18).
