South Dakota State hosts the Minnesota Gophers Sunday afternoon in the second round of the WNIT. Sunday's meeting will be the seventh all-time contest between the programs with SDSU holding a 5-1 record in the series.
The Jackrabbits are 24-9 on the year after beating Ohio Thursday night at Frost in the first round of the tournament. This is the 11th straight 20+ win season for Coach Aaron Johnston and South Dakota State.
SDSU has won 21 of the last 23 games. The team finished the conference season with a share of the regular season title at 17-1.
Minnesota is 15-17 overall and beat Green Bay 73-65 to advance to the second round. The Gophers will be SDSU's first Big Ten opponent since beating Iowa in the 2016-17 season.
Myah Selland scores 13.8 points per game to lead the balanced SDSU offense. She is joined in double figures by Paiton Burckhard (11.2 PPG), Tori Nelson (10.7) and Paige Meyer (10.4). Selland also contributes 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists on average.
Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.6 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.2 assists per game. Kallie Theisen blocks 1.2 shots a night. Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG) leader. She ranked second in the Summit League in field goal percentage and assists and and third in assists/turnover ratio.
The Gopher offense is led by Sara Scalia. She extended her double figures scoring streak to 22 games with her performance against Green Bay. Thursday. During the streak Scalia has averaged 21.0 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from three (87-of-202) while averaging 4.0 made threes per game. This season Scalia ranks 8th in the Big Ten in scoring average (18.3) and is seventh during Big Ten play at 19.4 points per game.
