South Dakota State hosts Drake Thursday night in the third round of the WNIT. Thursday's meeting will be the sixth all-time meeting between the programs with SDSU holding a 3-2 edge in the series.
The Jackrabbits are playing in their fifth WNIT and are 9-4 all-time in the tournament. This is the third time the squad has advanced to the third round.
The Jackrabbits are 25-9 on the year after beating Minnesota at Frost in the second round of the tournament. This is the 11th straight 20+ win season for Coach Aaron Johnston and South Dakota State. Johnston has won 25+ games with the Jacks 11 times in his career and eight time in the Division I era.
Myah Selland scores 13.6 points per game to lead the balanced SDSU offense. She is joined in double figures by Paiton Burckhard (11.1 PPG), Tori Nelson (10.5) and Paige Meyer (10.4). Selland also contributes 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists on average. Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.6 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.1 assists per game. Kallie Theisen blocks 1.2 shots a night. Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG) leader. She ranked second in the Summit League in field goal percentage and assists and and third in assists/turnover ratio.
Drake is 20-13 on the year and went 9-9 in the Missouri Valley regular season. The Bulldogs defeated Mizzou 83-78 in overtime in the first round of the WNIT and then UNI 62-55 in the second round.
Drake is led by Megan Meyer and Maggie Bair, who each score 12.1 points per game. Grace Berg also averages double figures, 11.3 points per game. Bair grabs 6.0 rebounds on average and Anna Miller adds 5.6 boards per game. Katie Dinnebier averages 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals, both team highs.
- South Dakota State is playing in the WNIT for the fifth time in program history and first time since 2017. The Jackrabbits are playing in the third round of the tournament for the third time. SDSU is 9-4 all-time in the WNIT, including Sunday's win over Minnesota.
- The Jackrabbits enter Thursday 25-9 overall and have won 22 of its last 24 games with its only losses in that stretch coming to South Dakota.
- Freshman Haleigh Timmer moved into the starting lineup last week and had back-to-back 20+ point games. She scored 24 points against Ohio and then 22 against Minnesota.
- South Dakota State (25-9) has won 25+ games in a season 11 times in the Aaron Johnston era and eight times since moving to Division I.
- Myah Selland recently moved into the top-10 on SDSU's career-scoring chart. She has 1,532 career points and averages 13.8 this season to pace SDSU.
- The Jackrabbits are 14-2 at home this season and have won 14 consecutive games at Frost. SDSU's last loss at home was December 11 (Kansas State).
- Four Jackrabbits are averaging 10+ points in postseason play (including the Summit League Tournament) Myah Selland (15.0 PPG) leads the way, followed by Paiton Burckhard (14.4), Haleigh Timmer (13.4) and Tylee Irwin (10.2).
- Selland is also averaging a team-high 7.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists in the postseason (the last five games).
- SDSU leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (38.9%) and is third in overall field goal shooting (47.9%). The Jacks are eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.35).
- The Jackrabbits led the Summit League in all-conference postseason honors - Aaron Johnston (Coach of the Year), Myah Selland (First Team), Paige Meyer (Second Team, All-Newcomer Team), Tylee Irwin (Honorable Mention, All-Defensive Team), Paiton Burckhard (HM), Tori Nelson (HM).
- The Jackrabbits are receiving votes in the latest WBCA Top-25 Poll and are 5th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25.
- SDSU won the 2021-22 regular season Summit League crown, their eighth regular season title in the Summit.
