South Dakota State hosts Alabama Sunday evening in the quarterfinal round of the WNIT.
The Jackrabbits are playing in their fifth WNIT and are 10-4 all-time in the tournament. The team is playing in the quarterfinal round for the second time.
The Jackrabbits are 26-9 on the year after beating Drake 84-66 Thursday night at Frost. This is the 11th straight 20+ win season for Coach Aaron Johnston and South Dakota State. Johnston has won 25+ games with the Jacks 11 times in his career and eight times in the Division I era.
Myah Selland scores 14.0 points per game to lead the SDSU offense. She is joined in double figures by Paiton Burckhard (11.3 PPG), Tori Nelson (10.6) and Paige Meyer (10.4). Selland also contributes 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists on average.
Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.5 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.1 assists per game. Kallie Theisen blocks 1.1 shots a night. Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG) leader. She ranked second in the Summit League in field goal percentage and assists and and third in assists/turnover ratio.
Alabama is 20-13 on the season and coming off a 79-64 win over Houston in the third round of the tournament. Megan Abrams reached the 1,000 career points mark in that game. Brittany Davis scores 17.4 points per game. Abrams adds 15.2 and JaMya Mingo-Young adds 11.6.
- South Dakota State hosts Alabama in the quarterfinal round of the WNIT Sunday evening at Frost Arena. The Jacks are playing in their fifth WNIT in program history and first since 2017.
- SDSU enters Sunday 26-9 overall and has won 23 of its last 25 games. Its only losses in that stretch have come to South Dakota.
- The Jackrabbits are 15-2 at home this season and have won 15 consecutive games at Frost. SDSU's last loss at home was December 11 (Kansas State).
- Five Jackrabbits are averaging 10+ points in postseason play (including the Summit League Tournament) Myah Selland (16.0 PPG) leads the way, followed by Paiton Burckhard (14.3), Haleigh Timmer (12.5), Tori Nelson (10.8)and Tylee Irwin (10.0).
- SDSU has won its WNIT games by an average of 23 points.
- Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard contributed 21 and 20 points, respectively, against Drake Thursday night. It was the first time this season two Jackrabbits have had two 20+ point scorers.
- Freshman Haleigh Timmer moved into the starting lineup for the WNIT and had back-to-back 20+ point games. She scored 24 points against Ohio and then 22 against Minnesota, followed by 8 against Drake.
- South Dakota State (26-9) has won 25+ games in a season 11 times in the Aaron Johnston era and eight times since moving to Division I.
- Myah Selland, Paiton Burckhard and Tylee Irwin continue to climb SDSU's career scoring chart. Selland ranks 10th (1,553), recently passing Kristin Rotert, Burckhard sits 16th (1,379) and Irwin is 19th (1,357).
- Selland leads the team in scoring (16.0), rebounding (7.5) and assists (3.8) in postseason games this year.
- SDSU leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (39.0%) and is third in overall field goal shooting (48.0%).
- The Jackrabbits led the Summit League in all-conference postseason honors - Aaron Johnston (Coach of the Year), Myah Selland (First Team), Paige Meyer (Second Team, All-Newcomer Team), Tylee Irwin (Honorable Mention, All-Defensive Team), Paiton Burckhard (HM), Tori Nelson (HM).
