South Dakota State will take on No. 4 Oral Roberts in the semifinal round of the Summit League Tournament Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.Â
South Dakota State opened the Summit League Tournament with an 86-59 win over No. 8 Denver Saturday afternoon. The Jackrabbits were paced by a season-high 26 points from Myah Selland - also a postseason high for the redshirt junior, who missed the last two postseasons with injury. Paiton Burckhard added 18 points for SDSU, also a postseason high. She also grabbed eight rebounds and gave out four assists, both team bests. Tori Nelson added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to continue her efficient play from the floor.
The Jackrabbits are 22-8 on the year - the 11th straight 20+ win season for Coach Aaron Johnston and South Dakota State. The team finished the conference season with a share of the regular season title at 17-1.
Oral Roberts is 16-14 overall and went 10-8 in Summit League play to finish fourth in the standings. The Golden Eagles beat North Dakota in the quarterfinal matchup 61-54. Keni Jo Lippe put up 22 points for the Golden Eagles and Katie Scott added 11. Summit League Freshman of the Year Tirzah Moore was held to one bucket from the field but finished with nine points thanks to a 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line. She had a team-high seven boards.
Overall, State's balanced offense is led by Myah Selland, who scores 14.0 points per game. She is joined in double figures by Tori Nelson (10.7 PPG), Paiton Burckhard (10.7 PPG) and Paige Meyer (10.4). Selland also contributes 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists on average. Selland has averaged 18.3 points in the back half of the Summit League season (the last 10 games) with six 20+ point games in that stretch.
Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG) leader. She ranks second in the Summit League in field goal percentage and assists and and third in assists/turnover ratio. Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.7 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.2 assists per game. Kallie Theisen blocks 1.2 shots a night.
Oral Roberts is led in scoring and rebounding by Moore, who averages 14.6 points and 6.0 boards a night. Lippe and Scott add 9.6 and 9.4 points, on average.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State takes on the Summit League Tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning a share of the regular season title and taking the higher seed based on NET rankings over USD.
- The Jackrabbits beat No. 8 Denver 86-59 Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round to move into Monday's semifinal against No. 4 Oral Roberts.
- The Jackrabbits are 22-8 on the season and went 17-1 in the Summit season. SDSU is on a 14-game win streak, the fourth longest active streak in the nation.
- Six Jackrabbits earned All-Summit League honors. Aaron Johnston was named Coach of the Year while Myah Selland (First Team) and Paige Meyer (Second Team, All-Newcomer Team) were selected to the all-conference teams. Paiton Burckhard, Tylee Irwin and Tori Nelson were deemed honorable mention with Irwin being picked to the All-Defensive Team.
- The Jackrabbits 2021-22 regular season crown is the eighth regular season title since joining the Summit League. SDSU has won nine Summit League tournaments and is chasing its 10th championship this week.
- The Jackrabbits are receiving votes in both the AP Poll and the USA Today / WBCA Top-25 Poll this week and are 7th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25.
- Myah Selland is averaging 18.3 points since the start of the second half of conference play - the last 10 games. She scores 14.0 PPG overall to lead the SDSU offense.
- Paiton Burckhard is averaging 12.4 points and 6.9 rebounds since the start of the second half of conference play - the last games. She scores 10.7 points and grabs 5.7 rebounds on average.
- Tori Nelson has been a mark of consistency, especially as of late. She shot 63 percent from the field in Summit League games, which led the conference, and is 69 percent over the last eight contests. She has scored 9+ points in nine of the last ten.
- SDSU leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage this season (39.4%) and is third in overall field goal shooting (48.7%), sitting only behind Iowa and UConn.
- Tori Nelson (63.2%) and Paige Meyer (61.6%) hold the top two spots on the Summit's field goal percentage chart in conference games. They are the only two shooting 60% or higher.
