WACO, Texas – Sixteen South Dakota State University equestrian student-athletes were recognized Friday for their performance both in the arena and in the classroom on a series of all-academic teams sponsored by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

The following five Jackrabbits were honored on the NCEA All-Academic First Team (repeat honorees denoted by *):

*Callyn Fox, Jr., Center Point, Iowa (Western);
Margaret Franke, So., Northridge, California (Jumping Seat);
*Natalie Gydesen, Jr., North Loup, Nebraska (Western);
*Cassandra Townsend, Jr., Andover (Western);
Julia Werkhoven, So., Tempe, Arizona (Jumping Seat).

First-team honorees must have competed in at least 70 percent of their team's meets and must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while maintaining full-time enrollment over the past two semesters (spring-fall 2021).

Second-team honors were awarded to the following three Jackrabbit riders:

*Annika Hanson, Jr., Hugo, Minnesota (Western);
*Rachel Head, Jr., Houston, Texas (Jumping Seat);
*Kodi O'Boyle, Sr., Saint Louis, Michigan (Western).

Second-team honorees must have competed in at least 60 percent of their team's meets and must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher while maintaining full-time enrollment over the previous two semesters.

Three more South Dakota State equestrian riders received honorable mention recognition:

Shelby Cochran, So., Oxford, Iowa (Western);
Rachel Darby, Jr., Rensselaer, New York (Jumping Seat);
*Isabelle Riggs, Jr., Alexandria (Western).

Criteria for honorable mention selections include competing in at least 50 percent of the team's meets and posting a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 while maintaining full-time enrollment over the past two semesters.

Rounding out the academic awards for SDSU were five NCEA Academic Honor Roll selections:

*Ashley Hess, Jr., Sioux Falls (Jumping Seat);
*Samantha Hunsecker, Jr., Lansing, Kansas (Jumping Seat);
Kate Koehl, So., Prescott Valley, Arizona (Jumping Seat);
*Rachel Retterath, Jr., Brookings (Western);
Abby Shumaker, R-Fr., Tipton, Iowa (Western).

Academic Honor Roll selections must have compiled a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA as a squad member and have been enrolled as a full-time student over the past two semesters, but waives the competition requirement.
